General / Off-Topic Boston Dynamics - Atlas

population control obvious, well just to keep you safe ...err right?

still its full of nice spots where you can stop it so not worried that much, but it very interesting indeed.

just keep them autonomous or let people require a pilots license.

I thought obtaining driver's license was supposed to be a proof that a person is qualified to drive. As we all know, that doesn't really work...Do you think it would be any different with pilot's license? I will agree with autonomous flying vehicles.

The technique will be at the top when we shall have two teams of 11 robots which will play at the perfection a real soccer match

:)

And this will be the audience

Thanks for posting. I used to follow what Boston Dynamics were doing quite closely but must confess I'd forgotten about them. Wow ... that's pretty damn impressive! Probably should have bought shares in them about 10 years ago!

That is both terrifying and impressive. Fortunately we're not in any danger yet. The big bottleneck at the moment is still mobile battery power. Can't find the specs for the new version of ATLAS though so I might yet be surprised.

I remember reading an article about a robot lawnmower that powered itself by eating slugs and digesting them with its robot stomach. Presumably a robot as large as Atlas would have to eat the corpses of its victims. They're probably waiting till the last stages of development to add the glowing red eyes and giant fangs.

This is why i suspect battery technology is one of the most important technological secrets of our time.

A nation with access to a battery/supercapicitor that can store and release huge amounts of energy, is a complete game changer, militarily. Thats before we even look at the civilian applications.

Submarines, Aircraft, ships & land vehicles would all be more effective, even having the capability to charge themselves up to extend their range.

New devices such as Mechs/powered armour suits would become vaible
So would energy based weapons such as particle accelerators, rail guns and laser weaponry.

An interesting example of what humans can achieve by mechanical application of the properties of physics. If king john had an army of these...

I would NOT want to be the guy with the beard and glasses in this next video. They're gonna find him dead with only the handle of that hockey stick still visible!

(fast forward to 1:25).

I'm reminded of the bots from Elysium.
Yes I know they're mocapped for the film, but the idea of autonomous robots that can move and act independently is getting there.

we are getting to the point where the physical mobility of these robots is approaching that of a human in protective gear (fire fighting, hazmat etc).

At that point they really start to be come viable as "disposable" rescue personnel who can go into environments you would want to send a human.

That could become a game changer for a lot of situations.

Wouldn't an autonomous drone (or swarm of them) be better in nearly all circumstances? They fly, they're faster, they're smaller, more reliable, cheaper?
