Bots and EULA...

My hypothesis remains that the PP Open only concept was advanced by FDEV to crowdsource bot policing, and allow FDEV to ignore the problem.

Now that Open only PP seems DOA, I have seen a few threads where dedicated PP and BGS players have pretty much thrown up their hands and said things like "kill it".

FDEV is pretty much done modding the BGS and PP, and will absolutely NOT invest resources to combat botting.

Face it gents and ladies, the box is built and the emergent gameplay is not about the game itself it's about people salt. The game is not being played - YOU ARE.

I have to say, I am fascinated by this delightfully vague statement:

3. Licence Restrictions
...(c) use cheats, automation software, hacks, mods, or any other unauthorized software designed to modify or defeat the purpose or experience of the Game;

I absolutely have to ask: What IS the purpose of the game?

To waste time? To make money for Frontier? I'm pretty sure there is NO cheat, automation software, hacks, mods or unauthorized software that could defeat either of these. What other purpose could the game have? We don't NEED to play the game, not like we need air to breathe, food and water, or protection from the elements. We play to be entertained, to waste time doing something that has no real purpose. The game makes money for Frontier because to play the game means to buy the game. If you have the game, that purpose is fulfilled.

As for The Experience...

Once more, I must ask for absolute clarification: What is the Experience?

Some claim it is Grind.
Some claim it is endless enjoyment.
Some are between these two.

But I would very much like to know what the Official Stated Purpose and Experience are supposed to be.

Frontier, I'm looking at you here - no one else can answer.

Community speculation, however, is often a great source of entertainment, so speculate away.

But I would very much like to know what the Official Stated Purpose and Experience are supposed to be.

Decidedly giving you a non-answer, but FD will almost certainly never give you a specific answer, because there is no answer, it's whatever FD's whim on the day is. (although that'd be a bad business model, to change the EULA on a daily basis).

Take something simple, like having multiple accounts. Elite Dangerous, totally fine. EVE, possibly even encouraged. But there's many games where just having multiple accounts (multis) is a bannable offence. Scamming in EVE? Fine. Scamming in Guild Wars 2? Ban. Scamming in ED? Does such a thing even exist?

Towards that end, defeating "The Experience" sounds pretty much like the Elite Dangerous equivalent of a prejudicial conduct charge; a catch-all for whatever their rules don't cover.

"Cheating" and with that "botting" is a problem in games where people compete and make winners and losers in the process.

Since Elite Dangerous has a big player base that plays the game non-competitive for them it's a non-issue.

But it's also possible to play the game competitive, via BGS, Powerplay or some sorts of PvP. For them cheating is an issue.

Automating ships to do a lot of BGS work (automated trading, if this is even possible) for or against another group for me is cheating.

Automating ships to load cargo-ships with powerplay supplies via the 30min menu-waiting mechanic, while the player is sleeping or at work, for me is cheating.

Extensive macro (ab-)use in pvp for me is not cheating, because the player is still actively engaging and "only" activating scripted routines, like pip-management or maneuvers. Using aim-bots (if this is even possible in ED) I would consider cheating, because it is a lasting effect that is "on" during the whole fight.

Bottom line: Yes, Voice Attack is probably[4] against the EULA, but it's FD's exclusive right to enforce the EULA whenever they like.

Interesting if this is the case, especially since HCS Voicepacks (for VoiceAttack) have a licensing deal with FD. They have also coordinated with FD in the past to have additional game state info exposed in the journal to be read by their plugin, and FD has even modified how certain submenus work so that they were easier for HCS to automate.
