Bought a type 10 as an armed trader - having second thoughts

Im actually thinking about switching to a type 9 and making my "interdicted when trading stragegy" entirely about running away.

I might hold on the type 10 if i thought it had a future for any kind of combat, but it seems to me to be just a big lumbering target. If i fit an 8 size shield thats just too much cargo space to sacrifice and a size six just doesnt seem to do the job in a fight.

Before i invest much more time engineering this lumbering beast, any combat/ outfiting tips when flying this thing that would still leave enough cargo space to do serious trading?

Or should i jsut buy a type 9? Thoughts from type 10 enthusiasts and traders appreciated.

I've never flown a type 10.

The only thing I ever trade in is my war anaconda lazily adapted to trade. The HRP's switched for cargo-bays, I leave everything else the same, shields in the top slot, SCB's full weps sometimes even the fighter bay. It's a bit less efficient run for run, but my stuff always arrives in perfect safety and I make more money off the pirates than the cargo.

I use 7C Bi-Weaves with G5 Thermal Resist, and 4 G1 Resistance shield boosters. It has 7A Thrusters modded with G4 Dirty Drives and Drag Drives (will be G5 dirty as soon as I get some pharmaceutical isolators).

Engineering is critical to being able to use the Type-10, IMO. Without engineering you're too slow to get away before your shields drop, and your shields are too weak to just stay and fight.

Getting 7A thrusters with high-tier dirty mod will make a night & day difference in how the ship feels to fly.

Yesterday, I flew mine to Ross 310 and spent an hour and a half in the CZ for this week's community goal, and had a blast. I only left because my cannons ran out of ammo.

Edit: Here is the build I'm currently using.

Type 9 will do fine.

I wouldn't go up against an Elite Conda outside of high sec space or anything, but the T-9 is a better trader, and with the right offensive/defensive mods can pack enough punch to have fun in.

Fit a SLF in the Type 10 ... makes a huge difference to your defence. It's more important than engineering, in my opinion. Saved me in an exploration build when attacked by a pirate.

I also have a tanked up T-10 trader for running CGs. In addition to the SLF, it has engineered beam lasers for efficiency, jump speed boost to 302 (wow ... nosebleed stuff !), engineered shields (cannot remember what I did to them), upgraded armour and .... for when I reach the CG I swap the high range FSD with a FSD that is engineered to resist attack. Call me paranoid, but I lost a few ships before I got it about right for my style of play.

The T-10 (with the engineered weapons) is also brilliant for trade CGs that also have a bounty hunting CG. Just go to the Hi-Res with the ship, launch the SLF and pick off the ships one by one.

The T-10 has one thing no vette, cutter, or conda will ever have, the ability to boost multiple times before existing the orbital.

I have a t10 fully a grade, full old g5s engineering (except hull) prepared for alien combat, but it has never left the pad. It looks too dull to launch

How much cargo can a T10 hold?

My Cutter outfitted for trading can hold 720 tons. It is engineered. When interdicted my shields never go down more than one ring before I jump away. My fully loaded jump range is over 20 LY's, I am not at home so can not look up the exact number.

Idk, I've never actually been able to find a time or reason to ever have an armed trader. Pips to shields and bounce. Money to make and time is money, fighting is time spent not making money and the possibility to lose a fair chunk of it while you're at it.

Use a Type 9.

752 tons of cargo.

Fit a Class 5 Primastic shield reinforced, 4x Heavy duty boosters, no chaff, no heatsinks. G5 Military armour. Whatever weapons you enjoy.

No NPC will kill you, plenty of time to runaway. You can also kill any NPC up to and including a FDL and never lose your shields.

I fly this ship in Open, but I wouldn't fly it at a CG.
