Bounty hunting is silly, it needs to change

I find it a bit weird that I can fly to a RES, take on multiple Anacondas, kill them all (and dozens of other craft) without taking even 1% hull damage. Having several thousand kills to my name isn't very "realistic".

I'd love to see more nuanced combat. Tougher targets, fewer kills, but higher rewards per-kill. How about - if I make a Wanted craft flee, I get a small reward. Destroy them, a much bigger reward. If I do enough damage to certain sub-systems, then maybe they'll surrender and I get a huge reward if I can escort them back to the station to face justice - but they might try to flee again. Hell, maybe I even get to keep their ship if we make it all the way back? ;)

yes, more stuff like this, cool suggestions. lots of awesome replies, thanks, Conda Pilot, you have a point too, it would be a shame to remove RES altogether, I just think they could be done a lot better than they are. I read the Changelog, these four things pop out at me as having the potential to make bounty hunting more fun.

- Missions scaling up based on rank
- Missions scaling up based on reputation with mission giver
- Mission targets can be generated in supercruise rather than USSs
- Spawned AI difficulty determined by mission (if spawned by mission)

If missions rank up now (I thought they already did), that might mean missions become more profitable than RES farming, also mission AI difficulty increasing by rank could make missions more fun, and I really like that mission targets can spawn in supercruise, meaning it's not just a matter of checking USS's for 40 minutes until you get lucky, frame shift interdictors might become useful. My plan for the future is simply to fucus on missions and forget that RES's exist. I'm looking forward to the update a lot, pretty optamistic too, so far Frontier has delivered a pretty good game, no reason to doubt them. Also pretty happy I'll be getting a steam key in a couple of days, +Rep to frontier for that one.

That's not bounty hunting... that's res farming.

THIS is bounty hunting:

Wow that dude is good.
Yes.. ISinona is arguably the best pilot in the game... And he has an amazing way of putting together a story to tell. It's a shame that FD hasn't put the effort into making real bounty hunting possible for players like him. For example, real bounty hunters want things such as 1) being able to look up what time zone the criminal plays from, or when he is usually spotted by stations, so he knows if he even SHOULD be hunting that player.. 2) large enough bounties shouldn't be able to hide in solo, and a few other things. Right now bounty hunters have to work their tails off for a minute chance of EVER actually finding somebody they are looking for.

So I've been bounty hunting at RES's lately with my Viper loaded up with 4 gimballed multicannon's. Its not uncommon for me to knock out an anaconda and collect a 130k bounty (4 gimballed multicannons ftw). I can average about 750k a run right now but I started to wonder the same thing. From a "realistic" standpoint, it didn't make much sense. Why would any pirate or ship with a wanted status come to a RES or NAV point. At the end of the day though, I'm having fun and I'd hate to see a solution come out that takes that away just to be realistic.

OP: I think you have your priorities wrong. Bounty hunting needed a buff.

The ONE profession in this game that needs a GIGANTIC nerf is trading.

The reason so many stopped playing. The very thin gameplay. Your are limited to res, USS, and other arcade style instances that have little value in actual gameplay. That whole big ring around the planet and limited to only a few locations. The planets landings I'm sure will be just as arcadish. Lets hope the patch eliminates the arcade, and hope the planet landing aren't limited to a few spots to choose from.

But if you nerf bounty hunting then traders need a nerf due to the fact they make stupid money, they would need to hire escorts which should take up large amounts of there funds right ?

This is your logic: If I make less, then everyone else has to make less.

^^^This and you may be hunting a player in another instance like Solo or Private Group. Even knowing if they are online or not would be a big help.

Think about what you said for 30 secs. You nerf trading. Traders pick up Vipers/Cobras/Vultures and start RES farming because it's more lucrative. Who exactly is left to pirate? Who does community goals for you to interdict? Who going to buy the Python/Conda's to be swarmed in the RES sites? The few traders that are left will be hunted to extinction and all you'll have is a large group of PvP players in their A class fighters moaning (even more) about the lack of decent PC targets.

Trading is open to all players to make money and buy larger ships (I know what most people say, Wah, but I don't want to trade/mine/explore - pick your fave). Life isn't fair. Life isn't equal. No one ever promised you the same amount of credits squeezing a trigger switch as someone who trades. Suck it up and deal with it.

Then think ahead before making a knee jerk statement like the above. Killing trading kills the game.

I only play solo mode (because I have low bandwith). I notice that most stations offer a list of top bounties for the area you are in. The list only has real players listed in the list. I think if I could play with the rest of the population it would be fun to hunt down those bounties but I can't play on my connetion. I think solo mode should offer only NPC bounties in this list since I can't play on my internet connection. At least it would fun to have some big NPC bounty to hunt for. This is my two cents worth from a solo player. It is strange how a RES site draws so many bad guys, good guys and miners in one area.
