Brief Summary of the Factions?

This seems like a good opportunity for a bit of self-publicity. You might be interested in Castor and Pollux, a choose-your-own adventure I GMed last year. Obviously it's too late to affect the outcome now, but playing through it should give you an idea about how the game might feel. Factions feature strongly especially in the later part of the story, although a lot about them has been embellished based on the information Frontier had given us at the time.

That's true, but riddle me this - with players constantly pushing humanity to colonise new worlds, how will Frontier keep the main power blocs from becoming tiny irrelevances engulfed by a sea of independent systems? And how will they make the process interesting to all their different types of players?

Just because a newly discovered world is initially independent, it won't necessarily stay that way.

The power blocks will be attempting to court, cajole and bully newly colonised worlds into joining their ranks. This will open player missions and NPC activity involving trade, shipping diplomatic passengers, going as far as setting up or running blockades, and even military action. Eventually enough pressure from one side or another might be applied to persuade the planetary populace to throw their lot in with one of the power blocks. Or maybe not...

And so the political and economic development of the galaxy moves on.

I should think the faction rankings will be a little more controlled than in Frontier or FFE. So I imagine that if you start allegiance to one faction and gain rank with them, that may prevent you gaining rank with another - at least I hope that is the case.

I would rather hope you could build a relationship with multiple factions as long as you do not work against them. So if you helped Empire vs Alliance, then Federation vs Alliance you would rank up in both Fed & Empire, although your rep with the Alliance would go down the toilet. Bounty hunting / defending against pirate raids should help you rank up with the owner of the system without killing your rep elsewhere.

<grins> I'd expect an Imp or a Fed to be along shortly to explain any 'nuances' - ho-hum.

I was not aware of any nuances. There is the glorious Empire in the middle of it all, and then you have the cultural darkness of the outer edges, populated by less fashionable people. Never up to the task of wearing the latest in hats, just to start the list at the top of my head. ;)

Hats? Nobody said there would be hats! That's it then. An Empirical life for me! I guess a sou'wester for those Solar Storms is a must then. Then there's the tricorne for when I feel a bit piratey (mind you, how would one manage with that peacock feather in deep space?). It's just the Fashion Police I have to be wary of then? :D

This is spookily accurate. You'll find out why on Friday, at least my backers will.

Cheers,

Drew.

Federation is archetypically the USA, perhaps at its most republican, capitalistic, best.

Empire is all of the glory of Ancient Rome, provided you're rich and powerful.

Alliance is a little more of the post-SW Rebel Alliance "New Republic"

Interesting use of the word 'best'. According to the fiction diaries, the Federation is a hive of corruption and polarised wealth (very rich / very poor)....

We need a space commie faction to beat up on...
