Brightness Comparison - Elite vs. Real (class O)

That said, just saw a picture from a planet that is 25ls from the star and it is REALLY bright there so maybe it is better to find two exact same distance examples? shouldn't be that hard to find in space engine?

I went through about 50 O6 stars and not a single one had a planet closer than 1AU, I think it's hardcoded into the game.

Remember in Elite you have a visor in your helmet.. I assume like the visors astronauts use these days, they are to prevent blindness. Probably in the future these visors can dynamically adjust to the light.. a technology that exists today already.

But i'm not sure on the lore part.. This is my interpretation that keeps the disbelief suspended.

Edit.. if there was a visor it should turn the dimming effect off in the outside camera.. but then.. the outside camera is not a realistic pilot experience.. hence why it's impossible to fly the ship while taking outside screenies ;)

Personally, I have the Sirius Corp Graphino Hyperdynamic Lumo-filter canopy. Sadly (or luckily), it has no off switch as Sirius Corp lawyers were worried about law suits from commanders blinded by their own stupidity.

I only wish I'd had the Pilkington Ultraclear coating to prevent the build up of space crud that covers my canopy 10 minutes after I leave dock :-(

In stuff like star engine, 50 does not a sample make out of billions, but will try to see if I can find one.

That said maybe a better comparison is found in systems that are identical between space engine and elite, the found stars and planets we do know?

I can wholeheartedly agree with three things stated in this thread:

1. yes I wish the stars in Elite were a bit more luminous
2. yes Space Engine is a wonderful bit of software. I have spent dozens of hours in it just sightseeing and creating pictures for my PC's screensaver
3. yes the first 2/3rds of Sunshine is some of the best movie science fiction of the last decade! And what a fantastic soundtrack!

Good thread.

Unfiltered version looks much better. I'm cranking up brightness on my computer for playing Elite, but I still found it much darker out there than I'd anticipate. So yes, it would definitely be good to be able to remove the filter. At least to some extent.

Have any of you tried the most recent version of EDFX? I use it solely for the reasons Dr Kaii brings up; it makes the stars look "hotter" and more realistically bright. There are times now, if I'm on an icy planet near the main star, that I prefer to land on the dark side because it is so bright.

Here is the forum post I used to find the program.

I've tried it but it causes horrible chromatic aberration on the rift so I want use it. I admit it helps non rift users get closer to this but it is indiscriminate in what it over saturates so not perfect, especially in the core
