Bring back the Docking computer.

docking computers a re slow and prone to disastrous failure learn to approach the station right in super cruise drop out correctly and dock manually it's faster safer and more rewarding trust me all you need is practice i never have trouble spotting the slot as when i drop out im looking right at it lol

Now, now, be nice.

A lot of stations that aren't high tech do not have a docking computer for sale. Yes, it is pretty findable in game, and yes, he could have discovered the info with a short Google search, but you calling him names not only doesn't help, it is also against forum rules. Let's keep it civil.

I'm used to it, I've been on the internet since it first came to the UK. I have seen the average users of the net go from helpful and polite to insulting and childish over the years. That sort of pointless rant has become the standard for posts these days and all I do is ignore them rather than play feed the troll.

Some small minded people don't understand that those who played Frontier and First Encounter had a Docking Computer as standard in their ship. Also, autopilot was a feature on all ships and most of the time, all you had to do it blow up bad guys if they intercepted you during flight, the rest was automated if you wanted it to be. This was the reason for so many ships pancaked onto planets because it wasn't infallible. I would have expected a DC to be available no matter where you were because it was pretty much an essential piece of kit in Elite but it seems the starter system in ED doesn't have that luxury.

However, it would have been far more helpful for someone to say where they could be bought instead of ranting like a fool.

I don't understand. Yes, in the previous games docking was a pain, but now, with modern high-sensitivity controllers, a blonde can dock like a pro.

Right, at first I though I wanted it, but now, it's so easy to dock, I wish they would light up the outside pads better and keep the gate ID;s on in the ring stations. I have a hard time trying to find my pad

Either you have a special ship or the manufacturers screwed up when they built mine. I'm still in the basic Sidewinder starter ship and I have not found a docking computer.
Keep looking friend they are there. You need to find the right station. if your still in your starter ship you need to work on getting better in it. the Docking is easy when you get used to it. I use the Docking computer on the large ships only to be honest. After a long trip I'm tired. =P Docking computer good. Cheers have fun.

Waaaait. Sorry to go slightly off-topic for a sec, but that bit about the autopilot being a feature on all ships is true for all the games? Because that *completely* breaks every single argument I read about ED not having one as it would "break the soul of what Elite is all about", and how "supercruise being boring and long is paramount to the feel of old games", and so on and on and on.

Back to your commentary, yes, people could learn some manners again. Guess not having the danger of being punched in the face makes them feel more comfortable to babble nonsense and act disrespectfully. :)

Yeah I have the same problem, the number showing your pad flickers on then off. Don't blink, might have to sit there a moment to see it light up again. lol

I don't understand the issue. The docking computer is so horrible at docking too, I'm 100 times better and smoother than it is. That's not even counting the times when it just bugs out and waits for eternity flying in circles outside of the docking port. But still, it exists...

Kind of works for me.

FTL drop to station, full power to engines, boost 2 times toward entrance and in distance of 4 km drop gas lever and let docking computer handle it.

In meantime i am free to pour myself another cup of tea.

I'm sure you'll find this docking computer and you will enjoy this particular waiting tune when using it ;).

Look for two things:

1- Landing pads that are active have their floodlights on. That means you can see they bathed in light instead of just a gray plate.
2- Your compass indicates the direction of the pad after you passed the docking port.

So while it is not as helpful as a huge yellow "LAND HERE" sign, you can make do while they don't patch that in :)

I love manual docking, I used to hate it but now I play my own meta games by holding the Z key and sliding in and out through the letterbox sideways... Docking is never a dull moment and is a lot of fun (even in a type 7)

In the original Elite (and to a certain extent Oolite) docking was a bit tricky so a DC was extremely useful. But in ED I found docking to be pretty easy, so for me a DC would be waste of a money and an internal slot (or wherever it lives).

Okay if I may make an Uneducated observation, since I didn't read all of what OP posted (too much since there is a DC, I just won't bother with one). IS OP playing this game with a Mouse/Keyboard combo? IF they are, that is the biggest obstruction to landing well. Once I got my x52 (Pro, x52 or any other Hotas type stick, will be fine too), the game became far more enjoyable to me, especially since I used to play Elite with my Atari Joystick on my c64. So if you aren't using a Hotas while playing I strongly suggest getting one even if it's an el cheapo of some kind, I paid a bit more for mine cause I Wanted a name I knew and could trust to make a good product.

I only really considered the docking computer on larger ships (as I found, I tend to scrape the tailfin of my Imperial Clipper when I'm flying in (and super-tired). Tiny ones like the Sidewinder have so little Space in the first place, that you really suffer lack of cargo-Space or other important modules if you install it.

Only thing I found is that the docking computer does the landings a little too hard, so I often retake Control just before landing (as scratching the Clipper is -expensive)
