Bring back the Docking computer.

I love manual docking, I used to hate it but now I play my own meta games by holding the Z key and sliding in and out through the letterbox sideways... Docking is never a dull moment and is a lot of fun (even in a type 7)

That's the best signature photo I've ever come across. I'm jealous of your life.

Waaaait. Sorry to go slightly off-topic for a sec, but that bit about the autopilot being a feature on all ships is true for all the games? Because that *completely* breaks every single argument I read about ED not having one as it would "break the soul of what Elite is all about", and how "supercruise being boring and long is paramount to the feel of old games", and so on and on and on.

Back to your commentary, yes, people could learn some manners again. Guess not having the danger of being punched in the face makes them feel more comfortable to babble nonsense and act disrespectfully. :)
I played Elite when it first came out for the Sinclair Spectrum. I played Frontier and First Encounter on the Atari ST. Supercruise is a replacement (so as not to break PVP) for the time distortion system of the original games and the docking computer was optional on the original Elite but fitted as standard on most ships in Frontier and First Encounter, if I recall, it was the Asp that was one of the few ships it was optional on. Both Frontier and First Encounter had planetary landing and trying to do that without a DC was pretty near impossible unless you enjoyed very long periods of waiting while it flew to the planet, entered the atmosphere and found the starport. The DC, it was part of the autopilot so you could select the starport and fly all the way there on autopilot where it would request docking for you as well. Put it on max time compression and you could go from space to land on a planet in about 3 seconds flat, less than 1 second for a station.

Tryst save yourself money and an equipment space and use the docking tutorial till you get it down, it really does come to you quicker than you think.

Amazing. Thank you very much.

DC ??? they are sooo slow to get you there :D

Fly her like it's hot and just rush all the way to the plateform, flying close to control towers and cracking their windows... that's the only way to go

Remember NOT do do this when you are in a Lakon Type 6/7/9 and used silent running to sneak past the mailslot :p

I'm still in the same system I was when I started. Now have 3000 credits so I still need to earn some more before I buy a DC. Now all I have to do is find a high tech system which was not necessary in the original games of Elite since Sol WAS a high tech system.

By the time you find one you won't want it. Just practice a little more. I have been playing flight sims for over 20 years so I have a really hard time relating to someone having problems docking in this game as I still find it unrealistically too easy. So I admit I LOL when I read these posts. On a serious note you should really just run inside the station and land then exit the station and repeat until you have it down. Otherwise you are going to get really upset ion a day or two when you crash your new ship or the docking computer crashes you which is more likely.

There is a docking tutorial. Do it. There is no reason docking should be an obstacle to anyone. Also remember to use thrusters.

I don't get why people can pay this game and think docking is the hardest part. No word of a lie, my 8 year old daughter docked in a coriolis station on her 2nd attempt.

Who wants to land in an orderly fashion, come in hot slam the breaks drop the gear and try to land like a BOSS! Just make sure your shields are up

Im kind of wondering if the op knows how to find a DC in the outfitting menu. At the risk of teaching granny to suck eggs, click on the basic discovery scanner and you will find a list of items you can upgrade to. In my humble experience they are available at most starports but more particularly industrial and high tech ones

Kudos to your daughter. But at least 60% of people here did it right on their first attempt. It's not a question of can, it's a question of want. People find it boring, so they rather not waste 1 minute docking manually and wait 2 minutes for the DC to do it for them while they watch a movie on Netflix/grab a cup of tea/use the loo/do literally anything else.

Yep, my docking computer is basically my "commercial break." It's nice to be able to slow down in front of the mail slot and go get a drink.

I gotta be honest, between the time I drop out of SC and dock, hardly 20 to 40 seconds go by. But I get so bored after a dozen trips back and forth between stations that I am going to test one out soon. Hope it's good =3

Ditto here, I like to lean back and chill as the computer takes her in. Never had any serious problem with it. Apart from its occasional attempts to dock side on at outposts. And its tendency to slam down lighter ships like Eagles and Sidewinders with an almighty clang. Thats what shields are for though right?

Never had any problem with manual docking either right from the start. And that was without ever doing the tutorial. I guess all the people who have trouble docking are the same ones who don't keep enough creds for insurance. Aww bless. Look at it try to play the computer game.

We so need destructible stations, so when you come in hot with a huge ship and graze a building, you actually take it along for the ride and get fined hundreds of thousands of credits :D

Bring back the Forum Post Computer! Type in any Elite related topic, and sit back and listen to the Blue Danube while it composes a highly emotionally charged rant for you! Brilliant timesaver.
