I didn't have any problems. What are you doing wrong?

he did update the game a few times, enough to get it to screw up its own dependencies. yeah, disgusting. but he paid the price, saw the light, repented and reinstalled the game from scratch and is a pure soul now. let's all just pray now.

Pray to who? Gates or Braben?

The issue might be related to read / write or admin permissions. Not sure if that would apply to AppData though. Still, turning something off and back on again fixes all kinds of issues and they are not always related to the software manufacturer. Anti virus is another good candidate. Anyway, regarding wrong locations, you can install everything where you want. Having your software in Windows\System32 is not necessarily a good idea though (just an example ;)).

The issue was the .exe file was locked from writing. This might happen if the game was running prior to the update. If the .exe did not cleanly exit, then Winduhs probably thought it was still running, and prevented the .exe from being overwritten.

The extra clue is the reboot. Once rebooted, the .exe file wasn't "running" and was then free to be overwritten.

This thread reminds me of that David Braben vid in which he proclaims that a cmdr will be able to hijack other cmdrs' vehicles in the foreseeable future...

...happened a bit quicker here!

Everything worked fine for me and I did the same updates. Maybe you shouldn't blame your janky computer problems on other people and fix them instead?

blaming other people? now you are indeed the sensitive kind. i'm sorry to have offended your feelings. the internet must be a real drag for you.

Just updated and all seems fine so far with this update.

That's still bad. If you need to reinstall windows you'll lose the game files.
With a 1Tb drive at least partition it 200Gb/800Gb :D
...or better yet, ditch that slow SSD and get a PCIe M2 drive, install the game files on that and come into the 21st century ;)
Eh, my OS resides on the M.2, the games live on a bigger SATA SSD, fast enough.

"Normal" Windows stuff, Win10 is quite jealous in enforcing directory permissions. I had once upgraded from Win7 Win 10 installation that would not allow me to upgrade GPU drivers. Same kind of error message. Long story short, I eventually ended doing format of C: drive and fresh reinstall of Win10.

My poor 6-7 year old pc has had numerous migrations, and I think my oldest HDD is from a previous build from 2009!
ED is the sole occupant of a 100Gb SSD, Most everything else is either on my main 500Gb SSD (if game) or on one of the other 3 HDDs' partitions.
Anyhoo, my point was that I now have weirdness like so:
ed-launcher-1.jpg

And then the launcher dies.

So this is what happens when you add disk on top of disk, followed by a messy Win7 to Win10 update... you kid yourself "I know this Windows stuff, easy peasy...", the reality is no one knows!

PS Any suggestions to resolve the above?
Yes, I'm sporadically seeing the same thing after the latest update. Restarting the launcher usually fixes it temporarily, and I'm able to launch the game.

and what is happening in your troubled mind, my dear? i'm blaming people? the horror! you want satisfaction or what?

My desires are irrelevant to the facts. Use a janky PC and you will get janky results. Your buggy, broken, and poorly maintained Windows installs are not FDev's fault.

Reboot and try again.
This looks like a particularly odd Windows error that I have seen a few times, where somehow Windows looses access to a specific folder where software is being either installed or updated.

that's a lot of assumptions you call facts, but it's kinda fascinating. tell me more about my broken windows!

add:
specially the part about a few dozen other games, several development environments and a lot of funky hardware devices, all of which tend to update flawlessly and very seldom,
if at all, require a reinstall. can't wait for your prose!
