Buckyball Run 4: Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin'!

Have a care, Buckyballers - those not so nice chaps from the so-called "Freeport Tax and Protection Service" are active around Freeport again. They will let you land but if you ignore their com messages or try to leave without taking the time to pay their "tax" you can expect to receive heavy fire from the moment you emerge from the dock. I somehow suspect that they would not respect the race.

Needless to say, a multiplayer competitive time through this system is rather unlikely, even without the network issues, since responding to com and taking time to dump cargo takes too long. Unfortunately one has to respect their marksmanship and they have a nasty habit of disabling engines to make you stick around...

Most definitely not cricket.

What are we at, day four? Day five of the BBR4 and there's just hint of life in the leaderboard! CMDR Freebird in his trusty Sidey Dolores pulled into Chango Dock a couple tons shy in the liquor department but managed to document his stops at Freeport and Azeban with some truly excellent selfies taken mooning Federation "patriots" in the empty loading docks where the booze used to be. That's good enough for us. He also gets to partake in that long held and revered tradition of knocking me down a peg on the board. Thanks for nothing, Free! ;)

CMDR Cheetah in the Sleeper Awakescontinues to close on Katzenfalconburger's Booze Cruiser but the Cobra MK III just might not have the sprinting distance to catch up to the Viper. But Cheetah's sure going to make it tough for any other Cobras who attempt to catch him.

Speaking of which I was once again thwarted by the solar storms and nav network failures which continue to run rampant through the galaxy. I will continue to try at least once a day, but so far I'm a big fat 0-for-4.

But, at least I didn't run into the gents described by CMDR Weatherwax skulking around Freeport trying to ruin peoples' fun. Dave, was there any damage to the Radius? That could be an expensive hit. Rest assured we at the Buckyball Run sympathize with your plight and wish to make a contribution to its restoration. You get an free Buckyball Run bumper sticker to replace any that might have been damaged during the engagement.

In other news. CMDR Cogg-Willoughby was seen skulking about the launch pad at Chango. Willoughby, a veteran of the third Buckyball Run, was part of a tight race in the Sidewinder class where he was the first to break the 20 minute mark by coming up with an inventive route. The dapper gent took off from Chango Dock for the fourth run in his Sidewinder Little Lifeman but has yet to return. Hopefully he hasn't fallen afoul of the bandits at Freeport or the unsightly rip in the fabric of space and time affecting so many of us.

There is now apparently a lack of booze at Eranin. With everyone trying to aid Azeban in spreading the liquid cheer of their 30th year of independence, they've run out. One would expect more, but with all of the fighting going on around there, they might not be able to collect enough mash to keep the stills running.

So, as with Freeport, all racers need to do is stop at Eranin and take a screenshot of the market to show a lack of alcohol and the checkpoint will count as cleared.

This race just seems to be snakebit, folks. Sorry for all the trouble we're having, but there are still four days left to race. And for those having trouble with their connections but still wanting to complete the Run, there's always this option:

Fortunately the blighters were kind enough to advertize their antics on the forums here, so I took two basic precautions.. Jump #1 out the gate was to Freeport. As soon as I dropped near the station I went dark and watched for any hollow blips lurking around the station like the vipers do at Chango.. Sure enough there was one lurking around so I did a 180 and aborted the run.

Quickest sidey ever?

It was a great run, although I'd prefer not to exit SC quite so close to Freeport next time!

I wonder who's going to take me off the top?

HUZZAH!!!

Finally got a valid run done!

Probably not my best time, but it very well could be my only racetime submission if network continues to be crazy.

If ya'll will excuse me, I see 3 very nice Purple Space Babes sitting right over there....

Once again, not a whole lot of movement on the leaderboard. Still many CMDRS MIA, but that doesn't mean everybody's asleep at the wheel. FoxTwo, frustrated by a lack of lag- and crash-free navigation, jumped all the way over into Solo Mode where he put up a quick enough time in the Bite Me I didn't realize I'd been passed until I got a note from him at Chango Dock saying "wish you were here."

Well, I can't let that go unanswered. I'm forgoing my usual slog through the multiverse tonight and heading right into solo to shave some minutes off my time. Maybe it will be enough. I can't be in last place on both boards...

In other news, there is no other news. So, until tomorrow...

Hey FoxTwo, while you're behind me could you tell me if my starboard engine nozzle looks okay? Cuz it looks like it's smoking a little bit. While you're back there, could you run a scan? Thaaaaanks. :p

Alright I haven't updated to board, but managed to squeak by FoxTwo by not a whole lot. I'm well within visual range for him, but if my, uh, co-pilot, yeah that's it, hadn't forgotten to get clearance at Freeport until death threats started being phoned in from the mooring office as we were going through the slot I would have had an even better time. Which is still not as embarrassing as approaching an O'Neil cylinder from the aft and barnstorming through the hab rings only to catch a face full of solar collector in the next section up.

The insurance cost, for anyone wondering, for a stripped Cobra comes in right at about 4K. And the station threw on a nice 300cr fine for when the next time I showed up. I'm so flattered that they noticed.

Sorry Z, too busy shaving off one more minute from my previous time :)

That is, of course, INCLUDING getting kicked off FD servers, reconnecting, and continuing the run.

See, even in Solo mode we get networking issues... FD has to get this all resolved before game goes "live".

OK so there's that whole war thing going on at Eranin and at Chango right at the finish line. There's no booze to be found. And Beta 2 is right around the corner.

But the big news is that I've taken first from FoxTwo. By about a minute. And that was with an interdiction and a botched landing approach. I have answered, Mr. Two, and answered with vigor. :p

Still... there are a bunch of ships that took off and have not landed. Either there will be a mad race at the end, or there's gonna be a whole lotta DNFs come tomorrow...

UPDATE: Upon further review FoxTwo had a really stellar run that in fact beat my improved time by a wide margin. FoxTwo is still in first for our private grudgematch in the Solo Zone.

Fine. Yay, FoxTwo. I will answer. With real vigor this time. Not that diet stuff I was using before. ;)

I'm going to officially log a DNF. Several runs attempted, results were:
Aborted due to softlock/CTD: 2
Aborted due to failed smuggle (fled the finish line getting my tail shot up by the cops): 2
Aborted due to "en route hazard": 3
Aborted due to falling asleep in flight and supercruising right past the finish until I ran out of fuel in deep space: 1

Finally!

I did some scouting earlier today and I finally found some places that are selling alcohol to get my run up and going, better late than never. I did a run just now in Solo as I wanted to at least register a time. I took 1 extra jump than I needed too, got far too close for comfort with the rings around a planet and had a very close shave with a Cobra sat in their fun place of nose down in the docking bay, but it was certainly fun.

Now I know that I have a route that actually exists, it's time to take on the MP challenge... at prime time... on a Saturday...

Oh and Eranin have started selling alcohol again :D

Eranin sells booze in batches - some days there's none, other days there's just about 1000 tons (bottles? litres?) for sale.

Freeport's dry, for sure.

Cops at Chango aren't alert most times. I dock normally at Chango without getting scanned at all.... no silent running needed. Just aim for the slot, and ease on in. I don't even need to boost (can't boost if I get pad 16 or 34).

Surely you deserve some prize at least for this ;)

At least I proved that the instance was stable enough to sc into infinity :) Ended up far enough out that after hitting the distress beacon the fastest way back to dock was to jump to another system and then come back and make a regular approach. That one was going to be a good one though - it was my last run before the booze shortage hit and having practiced "smugglers docking" quite intensively was ready to give it a try with a hold full of the stuff - which I did manage to get through the slot that time and made enough of a profit to cover my deep-space refuel :) I'll check the lot numbers at the after party - I'd bet there's going to be some there from that run. The guy I offloaded it to was muttering about "...with the cops getting antsy, it'll take me weeks to shift this lot..."

Well who would have thought that my first successful Open Online run would be on a Saturday, but it was. I was also a surprisingly smooth affair, Eranin was a bit jumpy with all of the people gathered for the conflicts, but I think that drawing the attention of the FTPS helped my cause tonight. Typically by the time I came to get some booze from Eranin they had sold out from earlier on ;)

I'm not sure whether this means that I was really bad in Solo or not but my MP time was actually only 3 minutes longer than my Solo time. We shall see. It was certainly fun though, with a couple of heart in the mouth moents as I hit 100% thrusters instead of 0%, thank god it wasn't boost though ;)

OK so there's been a little action. First and foremost, FoxTwo has all but cemented his first place standing, putting up a time in the Bite Me that's going to take some work to crack. I myself managed to shave off an entire minute from my time, but FoxTwo's lead is measured in minutes, not seconds so unless my mad skillz get madder in the next 24 hours I could have a problem.

There's already another problem, not that I need it. CMDR Orzic exploded onto the charts in his Lakon Type-6 Ermintrude, snatching second in both the Solo and Multiplayer categories. While I personally resent Orzic for knocking me down a place, I'm always looking for an excuse to re-use this:

7S1tu20.jpg

CMDR Orzic? I don't know if you have the time or inclination, but if you got in a clean run on either board, it might just make enough difference to catch 1st in either.

CMDRs Katzenfalconburger and FoxTwo? Watch your six... :D

In other news: There's still a day left to go in this Buckyball Run. I'm not extending it just so I can try to save face (nothing will help that now) but the deadline of the 27th was a typo. The actual deadline is on Sunday night, as per previous Buckyball Runs and as per the original post. On the bright side, if you were thinking you didn't have time to make another run, you do! On the downside, the PSB's will have to idle their engines for just a bit longer. But, back on the bright side, this will bring us one day closer to that holiest day of days, the Release of Beta 2. :D

Nooo! Booo! I've been knocked down a peg!

I've become sidetracked by the conflict and now my Cobra is as heavy as can be, I don't think I'll be improving my time. Buckyball 5 I'm aiming for you!

Oh so close. I would love to stick another run in and try and beat a viper in my mini space cow, but I'm going to watch the NFL in Wembley and I won't be back before midnight :(

I was going to have another go, but after 2 DNF I've decided to just stick with Dolores being the fastest sidey going :D
