Buckyball Run 7: It's not what ya do, it's how ya do it!

I like the bumper sticker, EZ. Looking like your best yet :).

Yeah, he definitely stepped this one up a notch. It looks classy.

Haha thanks... sadly I couldn't find a cartoonish looking black hole so I went with a rendered background (shamelessly stolen from APOD) and also couldn't come up with a stick-figure Asp to match the sidey in the previous bumper stickers... So rather than try to mix and match I went for a more polished look oveverall. Besides, BBRA* is a special event. It's okay to kick it up a notch.

Don't worry, the regular cheezeball style will be back for BBR8. I don't want people to get the wrong idea about us. :p

Take the Orca instead. It's much cheaper and hence you will have some leftover money for staff to pamper me. :)

I managed to squeeze 18 LY jump out of a Viper, but i doubt that's nearly enough for this. Since i am not at all wealthy, probably gonna have to go Hauler.

My understanding is that if you follow the spiral arms in instead of trying to jump across them then range is less of an issue. Someone may have already done the Sag A run in a Viper

Not going to post a decent time going the long way, though. Im not looking to break the record, but I don't want to be the slowest Buckballer to Sag A*!

I recognize it's gauche to reply to myself, but I'm doing it anyway, because I want to reserve the name of my ship for this run!

Class: Hauler
Name: Haulin' A*

Someone on Twitch actually crossed the galaxy (ie went to the other side, further than just Sag A*) in a SIDEWINDER. So, it could be done even in a Sidey. The question is only "how long will it take" :)

I was thinking I should do it in a Vulture, but someone else had already done it :p

Seriously? BBRA*?

Methinks you might wanna change that abbreviation... might give the young'uns the wrong idea about the whole thing :D

How about "BBC A*" instead? Ya know, for "Buckyball Challenge"... People getting it confused with BBC UK is probably better than getting it mixed up with lingerie :D

Wow! Got some eager pilots in this thread! I'm aiming to get this kicked off late Saturday/Early Sunday so keep your eyes peeled. And depending on "real life interdictions" as one of you very cleverly put it during the last race, I hope to start my journey to Sag A* on Sunday. We'll see how that plays out.

I honestly hope that's how people approach this. The top times are no doubt gonna be zillionaires in their Anacondas with 150 LY jump range and Class 10 Fuel Scoops that cram 30 stellar masses down their gullet in 0.5 seconds. :p But I'm more curious (and respectful) of the CMDR who DOES pull it off in a Sidey, even if it takes a week. Or month. :)

What? And give up the chance to sit here and snicker like an 8 year old everytime someone types BBRA*?

*snicker*

Speaking of 8 year olds, I'd like to reiterate that the style of the Buckyball Bumper Sticker is going back to the way it was after this race. I let Bucky do this one, but I've worked hard to build a brand here, and I don't want people getting confused. So here it is... Your reward for flying 25,000 Light Years and then back again.

Psh... Colorless. No pizzaz. No punch. No soul. Maybe I won't do this run if I have to stick that on the back of my ship...

Ya know, if you do run BBRA* (*snicker*) in tandem with BBR8.... many vets won't be available right? I doubt many would commit 13 hours in 1 session to get there, most will be still "halfway-there" even a week or 2 into the challenge...

That is, unless FD suddenly gives us extra commander slots :p

Oh, and a way to mule cash and equipment over :D

EDIT - oh I *could* commit 13 hours in 1 sitting for this btw, but I'm not really looking forward to it... that 12 hour marathon in LOTR was gruelling enough...

EDIT 2 - Hmm someone did it in a 26 LY Cobra and got there in 20 hours....

I'm going to try to do it in one run on at least one of my CMDR's if I can find the time to do it. It's one of those "Because it's there" things. Of course, having a job that keeps me pretty busy, I may not actually be ABLE to block out that much time. But I'm definitely gonna try to make the time for it.

And you don't have to worry about ME showing up in an Anaconda. I'm going to have to do some bounty hunting just to afford the components I want for the Hauler.

No worries there. I don't see BBR8 happening until June, after 1.3 drops. Shoot, I just got the BBRA* bumper stickers ordered. *snicker* You think I'm made of money? :p

Oh -- and I do think that expecting to finish in 12-13 hours in a ship with anything less than a fuel scoop that pulls 700/sec is wildly optimistic. I think Scoopin' is going to be by far the biggest time sink of the race, even over repeated faceplants into stars after 300 jumps and backtracking because all the jump points dried up. But as Rankaze said this is one of those "because it's there" things. Don't know if I'll be able to crank it out in one sitting, but I'm gonna try. But I'm getting to Sag A* now, one way or another. I know that much. :D

I have a suggestion on the "timekeeping" portion of BBRA* (*more snickering*)...

Just have 2 screenies - 1 for start time, and 1 for reaching. We take "real time elapsed". Keeps things simple, and Bucky doesn't have to wade thru all those "leg 1, leg 2, leg 3" shots.

So if a commander commits 13 hours (or more) to this in one sitting, the time will show. If someone takes 3 weeks to do it, the time is also shown.. I think most of us will do it for the "because it's there" reason ...

Well shoot, look at that! I know that guy! CaptainSodom! He was Sidey racer in Buckyball 2, engaged in a vicious back-and-forth battle with a CMDR named Hardware which looked very similar to the Alot/Gurlagg battles we've seen more recently. He also had what I believe is the first video recorded Buckyball, complete with a very well done tutorial explaining what he was doing and why along the way.

The Death Race 3300™ is a much more in-your-face affair than a Buckyball and is a live, simultaneous race to boot. None of this namby-pamby "run it again" malarky if you blow yourself up boosting out of the slot. ;) I'd suggest anybody who is a fan of the "Wip3out" style racing give it a shot.

Ahh, this takes me back... CaptainSodom announced his race back in beta right about the same time as the first Buckyball. I thought I'd introduce myself by giving him some bumper stickers. Everybody loves bumper stickers.

Good times... Good times.

Thank you for the endorsement and shout outs, good sir!

We are mere 11 hours until the first Death Race 3300™, and very possibly 10 hours and 58 minutes until the participants of the first heat turn into spectacular fireballs.

We currently have racers for the first heat, and plan to run up to three preliminary heats, with the winners advancing to a WINNERS heat. For anyone interested in no-hold-barred action, head to Arcturus region, and stop by at 39 Serpentis for the launch of first heat at 19:00 in-game time, or Ninsun for the goal. For the trailblazers, you are welcome to join the race. Details in the post linked to in my sig below.
