Move the camera around. I can use the hats with 135 ly jumps.

I can when I'm going parallel to the plane - it's when I want to go up or down that I can't seem to get any depth of view however I swivel the camera.

By "~81ly" , I assume you mean with Jumponium? I wasn't aware that any ship in the game could legitimately get above the low 70's.
I don't have a solution for you other than scrolling instead of zooming. Is your "Galaxy map Quality" setting set to high?

The best of the best anacondas get to 72 Ly but that's still a long way off from 81 so you are right in your assumption.
