General / Off-Topic Campaign to Stop Killer Robots

🤖 It's ... not a joke.

Fully autonomous weapons would decide who lives and dies, without further human intervention, which crosses a moral threshold. As machines, they would lack the inherently human characteristics such as compassion that are necessary to make complex ethical choices.

It would be better if robots fought our wars for us. If you imagine a robot vs robot war, it beats human vs human by a mile.
But what we are likely to see is dictatorial autocracies oppressing their domains with droid forces.

Don't see any side relinquishing this potential advantage in a hurry.

I read they already have auto-guns in the no mans land on the Korean border. Target anything with body heat over a certain size. Stick one on an oversized roomba and hey bingo you've got a terminator HK-unit that cats would like to ride on.

"The Super aEgis 2 is an automated gun tower that can find and lock on to a human-sized target in pitch darkness at a distance of up to 1.36 miles (2.2 kilometers). It uses a 35x zoom CCD camera with 'enhancement feature' for bad weather, in conjunction with a dual FOV, autofocus Infra-Red sensor, to pick out targets."

The fundamental premise of this campaign is that humans are better judges of who lives and who dies than a machine because a human has a moral conscience. I think human history and the atrocities humans have been all to willing to perpetrate upon one another demonstrate this premise to be fallacious.

And, in the end, it really doesn't matter to the person being shot who is shooting them or why.

It is too late, you can't stop it.

There is place, we cannot mention, on religious grounds and have fully automated gun carriers, running along the border fence and the kids on the other side, like to throw rocks at them. They risk getting shot, without a human being involved, but that is how things are like there and in many other parts of the planet.

No disrespect: What are the things, like one sided mines, that go off as soon as you pass it? Killer robots. Humans have been trying to get something else, to kill for them; since the Stone-age. That is why they started throwing rocks in the first place.

As always. It is not the tech advantage that is the issue. The issue is, who gets to play with it. :D

Good point in a broader sense.
How is an this different to a dog? Dog also lacks "compassion to make complex decisions" - when it's trained to attack the guys wearing red bandanas, it will attack guys wearing red bandanas. We've been training dogs to hurt or kill humans for millenia.
The only difference is that dog is "alive" and AI drone isn't. But that's just a matter of definition.

Generally, dogs have more compassion than most humans. Just saying. :D

Agreed: A dog brought up on pain training, becomes basically a psycho and has no real control of it actions.

Funny thing: WW2 the Russians trained dogs to go under tanks, using reward etc.. However. On the day the said dogs had explosives strapped to their bodies (the intention of the training) the dogs only crawled under the tank they knew: The Russian ones.

As to the use of using animals as weapons, it is reprehensible and the ideal, that it saves a human being at risk, is just wrong. Most trained animals, are loyal to a fault and to exploit that and endanger the animal, is just cowardly.

Things like sniffer dogs, with not be replaced any time soon, due to their abilities and flexibilities. Making a robot manage to do the same, is well beyond current engineering. Sniffer dogs can and will be improved and therefore stay a step ahead of their robot replacements. A handler can now talk a trained dog through an environment, from a remote place. The hander can see and hear, what the dog can, in real time.
