Can anybody tell me what good the Pulse Wave scanner is for mining?

Press the pulse button down and dont let go.
Look for asteroids that have a pixelated dark map over a bright base colour.
Only fire probes at them ignore everything else.

EDIT:-
The first pulse wont show dark pixelated stuff.
Headtracking sometimes breaks the pulse effect.
Limpets will break the pulse effect when they teleport to catch up to you.
Thick clouds and fog alter the colour of the pixelation.

It would be interesting to know the success rate of using this method, tried it myself, wasted a lot of limpets on heavy pixelated asteroids but no good didn't find one core in 30 mins of a Void opal hotspot. Guess you were very lucky. Graphics set to super-sampling x2.0 and only propecting heavily pixelated (almost black) asteroids.

Update : Seems it is still random, tried a different hotspot same tactic picked up 60 Void opals in 48 mins.
