Can I increase the cargo capacity of the free Sidewinder?

Anyway to do this quickly and cheaply so I can get past the initial trade grind asap? I am currently finding the Outfitting screen very confusing. Thanks.

Yes you can. The internal compartments (lower 3 for the Sidey) should account for your cargo bay, shield generator, and a Basic Discovery Scanner. You can easily replace the shield generator and BDS for more cargo space.

The number denotes the size of the module, the letter denotes the quality, or grade, with A being highest. Cargo bays are grade E.

Yes. Get rid of the scanner and buy a cargo upgrade, you go from 4 to 6 units. If you are feeling brave, or dim, you can also get rid of your shields and get another four cargo units, a total of 10.

I think the basic sidewinder hast 3(2*C2 + 1*C1) Internal Compartments. The basic outfit is a shield generator in Class 2, a Cargo Rack Capacity 4 (Class 2) and a Basic Discovery Scanner Class 1.
In a Class 2 Internal Compartment you can pack a Cargo Rack Capacity 4 in a Class 1 with 2 Capacity. So if you sell either your Basic Scanner or the Shields (or both) you can increase your Cargo Space.

Also worth noting for the future: when you get to the outfitting screen, if the starport has inventory/upgrades to sell for a particular system, you will see a little graphic with a (+) on the corner of the slot. I'm pretty sure every single outfitter has at least SOMETHING to sell for your internal slots (i.e: cargo holds, discovery scanner, refinery, shields), but you won't find all of the upgrades in any particular station. High-tech stations generally carry a larger supply of equipment. 2T and 4T cargo holds, which could replace your basic discovery scanner and shields, respectively, should be found at most stations.

I have a 10T capacity at the moment

those 400Cr/t profit is much better when its 4000Cr instead of 1600Cr - mind you no shields!

Not in the sidewinder, but I ran a Hauler with 22 cargo capacity, no shields, guns, just stripped out and pimped for maximum range. Made good profit doing that and also got very good at avoiding interdictions.

The Hauler is an EXCELLENT progression from the Sidey if you're planning on going full-on trading. The cargo capacity it allows at a ~52K CR price tag is dang good. I went Sidey -> Hauler -> Cobra.

If you lose the shields, make sure you keep about 40% of your credits in reserve during the cargo run, as at some point you will lose a fully loaded ship, and cargo is not insured.

I lost 500,00 credits when I flew my cobra with 52T of gold and no shields.
Got rammed up the back when leaving the station.

Since then I have given up a 16T cargo bay and got some big shields. Still get 44T as I converted by other internal bays.

Keep those shields and some money in the bank !

Quick (and possibly obvious) note for upgrades to larger ships - the class of an internal compartment determines the maximum size cargo hold it will take. The maximum cargo capacity is 2 raised to the power of the class, so Class 2 = 4 tons, Class 3 = 8 tons etc.

Before getting rid of your basic discovery scanner however, just remember that you can make money by triggering it each time you pass through a system that doesn't have a system map accessible from the galaxy map (red icon). You have to travel to sell the data to Universal Cartographics, but effectively when you do it's free money. This is more likely to apply once you have moved away from your start location, and particularly if you are working the edges of a sector, so the advice to sell your scanner and buy a C1 cargo rack is probably good if you are surrounded by lots of explored systems.

Yes. This is particularly true if you are using well known trade routes in the core system. Even if you would scan them, a lot of people already did that, and you will get roughly 600 CR for a system. But with 2 additional cargo, you can make 2000 CR profit one way. This is the way to go, if you want to grind some trade route.
If you are going out of the core systems, then I would put the Basic Scanner back in, since it is necessary to find new stations to trade with and to refuel, as a fuel scoop would also take an Interna Compartment away.

A man after my own heart....although I am still at the Sidey stage.

You'll get there eventually, just keep it up! I actually have a pencil-and-paper log book for the systems I'm calling my "home base". I plotted out four or five nearby systems that have a mix of economies (refinery, extraction, high-tech, agriculture) that ALSO have a port fairly close to (<1000 Ls) the nav point.

When I log in to the game at a star port, I pick up all profitable "bring me x tons of y resource" missions that they have -- they're my favorite missions because they have long timers and no fine penalty for non-completion. I jot down two things under the port name on my paper: commodity name and quantity.

I jump to a system that has one of the resources I need. In that star port, I pick up all the missions again, jot them down, and buy whatever resources I need for the first missions. When I get the item in my hold, I put a check mark next to my list so I know I'm done with it. When I have all check marks at a port, I can go and drop off all the goods and start over.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

You never know what you're going to find in the bulletin board. I picked up a quick, easy 3T Palladium mission for 79K CR last night. System was 4 LY away -- jump there, jump back, boom. 79K reward - 45K cost = 34K profit (11.3K per T). :D
