Newcomer / Intro Can I make an all-in-one mining ship?

Question from an longtime player but one who's never delved deeply into mining: is there any reason why mining builds seem to focus on laser, subsurface or core mining? It seems the only difference is the hardpoint loadout. Is there any reason why I can't make an all-in-one mining ship that can do all three? I feel like I'm missing something obvious here... much obliged if someone could shed some light.

Of course you can. Here's the mining Krait I took to Sag A* to help build Explorers Anchorage (with a size 5 GFSD booster for the trip). It does laser & core and (only) holds 196t, but that's enough for me. If you want to add subsurface, just drop the top-middle mining laser. It's easily fast enough to escape from any pirates, and has enough shield & hull to take a few shots if needed,

Thanks for the quick reply! How long does it take you to fill up the 196t hold? I'm considering doing a build like this:

Or maybe this variant of your build, with a SLF:

I'm probably not gonna engineer it. It's really just to put on exploration carriers so I can pitch in on tritium mining, but I figure if I'm going to build a miner I might as well make it an all-arounder. Last time I mined was back before the mining overhaul, and that was purely for engineer unlock.

If it helps I run an Anaconda for mining.
2 AB's in the 1 HP's, Sub-surface 2 HP, Seismic 2 HP, 2d mining laser in a 3 HP, leaving 2 3's and 1 4 for weapons,
2 Chaff, 1 Pulse wave, and the rest Boosters.
All cores are A's with Power plant overcharged lvl 1, power is 40.24/40.32 need to engineer power more..:)
7a shield, all 3 6's cargo, 2 5's cargo and 1 5 Collector, 4a Refinery, 3a Prospector in 1 of the 4's and cargo in the other 4, supercruise in the 2 cause im lazy, and the DSS.
Jumps like a fat pig @17.79, holds 272 ton.
Only the 1 engineered lvl "power" but its a start a suppose...
When im done with engineering it should be able to take a beating in a fight, I hope...lol

Good Luck and happy mining...o7

Oops, that should be 160t... When I mine, it's usually for cores (with laser mining any decent platinum rocks while searching for cores), not tritium, so I can't moment on the rate of finding good tritium. I can fill up 160t in 1-2hrs depending on the RNG - each core can yield 15-18t if done right.

It really depends on the players philosophy. Some people only specialize in Lazer or Core and build accordingly. At the same time some want to build a mining ship that can defend against an NPC pirate and will use the extra hard points for defense.

I can't say for certain but I believe the general philosophy is that in laser mining people want lots of cargo space (400T+) so they pick bigger/slower ships. In contrast core mining requires you to cover alot of ground so the focus is on speed while not needing as much cargo (usually <200T). Plus the bigger ships have a hard time getting between the rock fragments after a core has been blown.

If you want to build an all around miner then go for it. It's all down to personal taste

This is me. My miner is a Krait II specifically outfitted for core. Fast, good jump, three large hardpoint weapons for interdiction and pirate relief. Point defense to ward off hatchbreakers. 128t of capacity. I like the visibility and agility for flipping around the rocks to set charges, use the abrasion blaster and support my limpets.

My design choices were made to build a ship that was fast and could hit back to deal with interdictions. The scoop and jump to make it painless to fly to the far-flung best sell stations. I just did a mining trip yesterday, got 114t of Musgravite, Benitoite and Monazite. Flew 200 light years to the first sell station (8 jumps, 10 minutes). Sold the first two types there, and then flew 120 light years to sell 30t of Monazite. 830k average sell for 94m total.

My sort of ship isn't popular among miners I don't think. Speed, jump and weapons are not typically given much consideration in a mining ship. But it suits me and just what I had in mind when I decided to build a dedicated core mining Krait.

I like it man. It's unique and honestly core mining doesn't really anymore than 2 hardpoints. Maybee you could trade one of the lasers for a SSD missiles but really SSDs aren't worth it anymore. If I could make one little suggestion? If you engineer your power plant to armored/thermal spread and set your guardian FSD Booster to priority 4 along with your FSD your ship will run alot colder.

Good points. Don't pay attention to priorities in my builds haha. I do have it set that way in the ship, but I don't pay attention when I grab the build, which could have been captured a year ago, and constantly gets reset when any engineering is done.

I used SSDMs before, but decided the return wasn't worth the hardpoint, which also reduced my ability to kill the interlopers. It's an opportunity cost thing.

The power plant is on the list, it's left over from a different ship, and Twin Reverb used to pull more power than it does now. I plan to retrograde the overcharged to G1 with Thermal Spread, just need to get around to it. Thanks for the tips.

Ahh noted. I thought it was a bit scattered but I didn't want to criticize much. I figured you probably had your reasons.

I totally agree. I used to have one on my laser miner and in a 3 hour session I might encounter 1 SSD. There are so many other things more useful to take it's place.

Hey man I'm a big believer in recycling modules. That's a good idea with G1 oc/thermal spread. I'm one of those ocd max engineering types so I sometimes overlook simple options like that.

Here's my all in one 200t mining Python
You really don't need all the A rated core modules or Prismatic shields :D but I like it like that
