now that there's PP i personally feel they should remove the ranking for federation and empire. Or better yet...they make a much more complex rating system for PP in which there are more ratings which are actually identified as ranks. The military type badges next to the ratings are already ranks pretty much....i mean they are designed to look like enlisted american army ranks (google it you'll see). Of course the rank names would vary depending on factions. Advancing to a far enough rank in PP with federation powers would grant access to Federation ships and the same for imperial powers. And then they could finally bring an alliance ship. This way it would require a real commitment to earn the specific factions ships. i'm glad i can buy the clipper but i actually hate the empire and felt dirty doing missions for them just to earn the right to buy it.

I mostly see people currently ranking in the empire, since the clipper is an incredible faction specific ship, and the dropship is just utter ****. 1.4 does add the fed assault ship and gunship, which have immensely better performance compared to the original dropship, so hopefully some more people will rank up in the federation after 1.4 is out.
I think the best thing would just be to let players only fight for one faction, but let them buy other faction's ships more expensive on the black markets.
This would even fit the current state of the game much better - I've seen conflict zones where the Federation had more Imperial fighters, couriers and clippers than the Empire.
