Actually, it's not "just" my opinion.
Let's look at your opening post shall we and we will keep in mind you've been with us on the forums for
over 12 months, so you do know all about the SOG threads and have seen the weekly threads asking for people to play in open
Where did you get that from?
What numbers do you have access to?
Proof or random nonsense?
Not everyone who plays the game will play through Steam - linking your Steam account to your FD client also has a knock on effect of Frontier losing money from purchases made through a linked account as Steam likes their 30% cut.
So quite a few folks refuse to use Steam or link to Steam so when they buy stuff, FD gets 100% of the money spent.
Even my own timer on Steam is wrong, by a large margin. As I removed the link myself as soon as I found out Steam was taking a large cut for doing nothing.
So you've never seen a post with this topic, in 12 months of being here?
Unlikely.

There is no way any forum user who has been here for a year or more could have missed this topic and not ventured into at least 1 discussion on it. Even if it is was by mistake.
It's been so bad, the mods have given the topic its own subforum due to the pollution and hostility it has caused in the main discussion area. So now it's been shoved out of sight (metaphorically speaking)
And you want us to believe, you've not seen any of this over the last 12 months and made this thread out of genuine curiosity?
Well, I tell you what, if that's the case - you may want to click "The Wall of Information" link in my sig, for information on this topic that dates back up to 5 years ago and comes right up to modern era Elite: Dangerous.
Then follow the links to SOG 1 through 4 (in The Wall of Information or here in this subforum).
Also read the Lore regarding where "Dangerous" in the title comes from, as you'd not want to look foolish with a post saying "it's not called Elite: Carebear" or some such rubbish.
Do some research on Peer to Peer networking as well, as it is a major factor in the mode system and why you may not see a lot of players (it actually could be your internet making the game feel empty) and at the start of "The Wall of Information" is a video from Amazon regarding the servers Elite: Dangerous uses - if you're technically minded, that video will also show some glaring flaws with the network type Frontier chose.
And when you've done all that, you can insert my answers and many other forum users answers to those questions
