As it stands now, communication is a tricky thing. You either have someone on a headset with you, or you have to type out text messages in an interface that doesn't lend itself to ease-of-use when you're airborne. Here's a way to do it without breaking game immersion.
It can only be done while parked in a station. It would be part of 'Station Services' and give pilots a chance to communicate among themselves. Make it more of a multiplayer feel rather than single player with others.
You can only see messages if you're logged into the Galactic Network. Personally, I'd hate to be flooded with messages as soon as I touch down.
Allow some customization of channels. Let us set up private networks that server cross-talk.
Have some pre-defined channels that do not cross-talk. Doesn't do much good to talk to someone for help that you don't know, who isn't even in your server. Maybe have four networks for the main factions (Fed, Empire, Alliance, Ind) and limits your communication depending on what faction of the station you're visiting is on.
These are just starter ideas, there's room for alot more flexibility to work with here.
