So this may be beating a dead horse at this point and I hesitated to post in the forums due to the fact that no matter what you post, if it criticizes the game there is always someone waiting in the weeds to tell you to either suck it up, its your fault or deal with, but considering how much of an issue I have had lately I felt the need to say something. The servers are terrible, the current system does not work to support large groups of players being in the same system, the instancing issues that have existed for years have still not been addressed despite pushing forward on a new expansion that somehow believes they will now allow a "sphere of combat". We still cant even get more than 4 players in an instance without crash after crash occurring so how are we supposed to believe that multiple commanders will be able to not only instance together but to instance on the ground in combat and also in ships to assist ground combat.
In the current weekly event as with any other revolving around combat many commanders are in a set number of systems all trying to assist one another in the weekly goal, this is amazing gameplay and why I love playing open in Elite, for years I have stated that Elite was meant to be played in open and was a multiplayer game. After the last couple weeks I have to rethink that idea. It really doesn't seem like its meant to be multiplayer outside of maybe private groups. Yesterday, between multiple attempts to go into AX CZ's I experienced a total of 33 Purple Python errors and 8 Blue Cobra's. Checking system chat the problem was rampant with multiple commanders losing connections anytime they entered or left super cruise, going to stations or dropping into cz's. My wing members were dropping in and out of instances in real time, thargoids were becoming invisible due to instancing issues, and much of the time was spent trying to reset bugged combat zones and adding back wing members who lost connection. Throughout the day I was in a number of wings with different players, all experiencing the same issues.
This is not a new issue, and it seems to occur anytime large numbers of players attempt to interact, but even in a wing of four instancing issues persist and the connection issues have been present for years. I just don't understand how this issue persists, I know the system Elite uses is p2p and I wont pretend to understand all the inner workings of servers and connections between them and the players, but I do understand that this is not a normal acceptable amount of issues to have in a game this many years into its lifespan. The expansion which I am still very excited for as I love all things Elite is out in a few days and as far as I know there are no changes coming to the servers or how they function. At one point I was most disappointed for the lack of ship interiors but like most everyone else I got over that and moved on, but this issue saddens me the most because after years of playing and encouraging others to try open for the interactions, the amount of difficulty in fulfilling this experience FDev allows to persist is simply unacceptable. There is no other game that I play that allows this many server issues to persist without any effort to correct or change. These games do likely exist I simply am saying I don't personally know them or didn't stick around long enough to experience them. I have over 2,000hrs in this game, I love it and the community, but sometimes it feels like the devs just don't listen, we need server changes to facilitate greater numbers of players existing in similar instances, we need these instancing bugs fixed and we need a better server model that will actually support the "sphere of combat".
