Can we talk about the servers?

So this may be beating a dead horse at this point and I hesitated to post in the forums due to the fact that no matter what you post, if it criticizes the game there is always someone waiting in the weeds to tell you to either suck it up, its your fault or deal with, but considering how much of an issue I have had lately I felt the need to say something. The servers are terrible, the current system does not work to support large groups of players being in the same system, the instancing issues that have existed for years have still not been addressed despite pushing forward on a new expansion that somehow believes they will now allow a "sphere of combat". We still cant even get more than 4 players in an instance without crash after crash occurring so how are we supposed to believe that multiple commanders will be able to not only instance together but to instance on the ground in combat and also in ships to assist ground combat.

In the current weekly event as with any other revolving around combat many commanders are in a set number of systems all trying to assist one another in the weekly goal, this is amazing gameplay and why I love playing open in Elite, for years I have stated that Elite was meant to be played in open and was a multiplayer game. After the last couple weeks I have to rethink that idea. It really doesn't seem like its meant to be multiplayer outside of maybe private groups. Yesterday, between multiple attempts to go into AX CZ's I experienced a total of 33 Purple Python errors and 8 Blue Cobra's. Checking system chat the problem was rampant with multiple commanders losing connections anytime they entered or left super cruise, going to stations or dropping into cz's. My wing members were dropping in and out of instances in real time, thargoids were becoming invisible due to instancing issues, and much of the time was spent trying to reset bugged combat zones and adding back wing members who lost connection. Throughout the day I was in a number of wings with different players, all experiencing the same issues.

This is not a new issue, and it seems to occur anytime large numbers of players attempt to interact, but even in a wing of four instancing issues persist and the connection issues have been present for years. I just don't understand how this issue persists, I know the system Elite uses is p2p and I wont pretend to understand all the inner workings of servers and connections between them and the players, but I do understand that this is not a normal acceptable amount of issues to have in a game this many years into its lifespan. The expansion which I am still very excited for as I love all things Elite is out in a few days and as far as I know there are no changes coming to the servers or how they function. At one point I was most disappointed for the lack of ship interiors but like most everyone else I got over that and moved on, but this issue saddens me the most because after years of playing and encouraging others to try open for the interactions, the amount of difficulty in fulfilling this experience FDev allows to persist is simply unacceptable. There is no other game that I play that allows this many server issues to persist without any effort to correct or change. These games do likely exist I simply am saying I don't personally know them or didn't stick around long enough to experience them. I have over 2,000hrs in this game, I love it and the community, but sometimes it feels like the devs just don't listen, we need server changes to facilitate greater numbers of players existing in similar instances, we need these instancing bugs fixed and we need a better server model that will actually support the "sphere of combat".

I agree completely, it ruins multiplayer a lot of the time. You wing up, in our case 3 people, and go try do some bounty missions. But often while we're traveling to a mission signal we get separated through instances. One needs to drop from cruise than fsd back into it and then one might see his wing buddies again. Or the navlock, not the whole wing being dropped when you drop but just one person together with the one who they had set their lock on. When its just me and my brother, most of the times it seems ok. But more than that, no. Yesterday (day before launch of Odyssey) we had issue after issue and it ruined the fun for us. You want to play together, but you can't. We don't play open btw, private. Then there is the duplicate problem. Me and my brother where doing a pirate assassination and I dropped before he did. Then when he dropped, the target and his gang of 3 vultures, spawned in again. So we had to fight 2 FDL and 8 Vultures. Duplicates...a pain. And then you have the random crashes. So yes, I'm sure many other people who play in open or do wings in private experience the same thing. And they ain't even new. Here to hoping the devs fixed some of this at Odyssey launch.

The instancing issue is so bad that it is becoming self aware and creating new content in the game, such as the 0 sized thargon swarm creature. Yesterday the Hydra we killed spawned it and we had two thargon swarms to deal with during the battle.

It really kills the fun in the game and it's not only a matter of playerbase fun, but loss of money from FDev side, since many players find no fun playing single-player games and give up on ED because they cannot play together. I have at least 2 friends in this situation.

And by the way, even playing solo the instancing is problematic. I remember being kicked out of mining sessions many times for no reason, playing alone.

#fdevplzfix.

It does not use servers untill the very last resort to keep you connected to the other hosting player...
Its all point to point. user to user hosted in open,.. with the main server in Ireland regulating the player matching only...

Servers farms around the world are back ups to players to players only, only if ping times data drops get to high will it switch to a server connection as a last ditch attempt to keep you connected...
You get an error code because even the server farm failed to get the ping and data loss to a playable state...
Thier P2P netcode is just to bad to run the game for many players locations...

So, if this is a p2p thing....is there anything that we can do on a LAN? Seriously, there's 3 of us in these walls with hard-wired gig lan but only 25/25 internet. If we can keep some of this data inside, it would be amazing!

If you select OPEN nothing, you at the whim of the match making server selecting some one else as the instance host instead of allowing one of you to be the host...
Private group on the other hand insures the group creator gets the hosting duties...
So if the only reason you play in open is to get another wing player to get a full wing set then you balance the choice over getting issues with the hot selected...

Location location location matters If a network pipe you go through is crap because its the only choice due to a monoploy agreement and no rival pipe is available to get to getting a host that forces you through that provider to connect to that google fibre player whos hosting the instance, it means our smeg out of luck but as every one else does not connnect through the same pipe as the three of you there fine...
