For example, while I'm mining for void opals, are there engineer materials available to be scooped up? Or what about metallic rings?

google thargoid barnacles. i used these b/c also loathe prospecting. they are kind of like dav's hope for raws. once you understand how they work, look in the big list of barnacles for one on a planet with a high concentration of arsenic http://elitedangerous.hozbase.co.uk/customtable/view/barnacles
Another option are the new surface geological features on volcanic planets. This is prospecting, but much better. Not quite the step up that core mining was, but still a big step up from the old prospecting IMO

I don't know anything about the geological features. I did a quick google and most of the links are old. Is this new with chapter 4? Are barnacles better than geological features?
The geological features could be found with a lot of effort for quite some time now. They are now highlighted using the new DSS. They are larger clusters of objects around which "material containers" spawn. Barnacles should be highlighted now as well, but I haven't checked that for myself yet.
Using the old mining beam specific materials appear as well, I am not sure how common or if you can find arsenic at all in asteroids. The new mining tools don't spawn materials.
Head to LHS 2725 Body: A1 Take with you SRV + Dscanner.
probe the planet. pick first Geological site and head down there -> get into srv and start shooting teh crystal clusters - theres TONS of mats around those locations a big percentile on that location gives Arsenic etc. You can also use a standard mining lazer in teh ice rings along with teh new minign tools to get teh occasional arsenic on the way. However doing teh srv -> geo route gives you plenty of mats more and worst case you can trade teh higher tiers then down to arsenic or whatever you need.

All mining is for profit, do it the old fashioned way and get plenty of mats. Or, do core mining and then jump in the SRV for mats, tends to be quicker and give you a wider assortment of mats anyway.
