Can you explain 180 Degree Stall

Hi all,

Can someone please explain in full maybe with some video or photo of what an 180 Degree Stall is.

Google not being my friend on this one

Is this USA for a Zero G Roll?

If not id really like to hear what this is. Thanks

A stall is when a moving object's momentum is ceased. A 180 degree turn is when you turn around to face the opposite direction. So a 180 Degree Stall is when the train stops moving in one direction to turn back on its self and go the other way :) Very much like a turn around, or a cutback. I've only ever really seen this term used for coasters in regards to Nemesis at Alton Towers in the UK, but maybe it's used generally for inverts or other coasters. I suspect, like many coaster element/inversion names, it's origin is in aviation.

Nemesis' 180 Degree Stall turn

edit: Further reading suggests the upward movement has to do with the "stall". Maybe a pilot would literally stop accelerating and use the upward momentum to turn around? I really don't know enough about this stuff. Hopefully someone knowledgeable will come along and explain more clearly :D

Gotcha [wink]

I got married at the Hotel there in April 2014 and spent the afternoon in the park. One of the best rides of all time and i think people from all over the world agree. Rode the smiler 3 weeks before it crashed in those front row seat. Silly human error though and have ridin it since. Always say its our wedding anniversary and they let us to front of queue. How many shoes has been lost on that corner in your photo though :)
Wife and I are very much coaster fans and so thanks for sorting that one for me :)

No worries! I'll just add, I think the banking is part of what makes it a stall over just a simple turn around. And wow, married at Alton Towers! That's pretty awesome! I'll have to remember that trick next time I'm there and let them know it's my anniversary to skip the queue :D

Works every time [wink] but yeah was best day/2 weeks of our lives. Alton towers for 5 days, themed room and all the shizz and then to Florida for Universal and Busch Gardens. USA dont realize though big is not better as actually a loop takes a second or to longer and thats not scary. Nemesis, Smiler, there freaky rides.

Im a British person so as you know we have F***KED up imagination [wink]. check out my Alice Madness ride here. No logic but amateur and best ride by far i have made.

The inverting elements on RMC coasters where you roll 180 degrees and remain upside down for a long section of track, before rotating back around to flat are also referred to as stalls .
Stalls can also include rotating to inverted or beyond, then switching roll direction to go back to flat. (Imagine a regular zero g roll but the roll changes direction at the 180 degree point and rolls back the same way it entered the element).

Here is the Stall element on Wicked Cyclone, as you can see it rolls beyond the 180 point, then switches the roll direction before returning to level track.
