Can you help a newbie ?

That’s very odd, if you don’t mind what is your psn I’d, I can have one of the moderators send you a invite and see if that works
My PSN is stokey1111, but my friends requests are restricted to friends of friends... I can undo the restriction, but only for a short time, and i'll need a name otherwise I could be adding any random that sends a request, A'ha I get few from other games.

Ok, just give me a few cause I’m at work and I’m doing this between Times

First, let me welcome you to the Elite: Dangerous Galaxy. My rule 2 is; Have Fun (it is just a game, but WHAT a GAME!). Rule 2a is; In VR have LOTS more fun!!!

The learning curve is so steep (it has an overhang!) that the mountain goats go around in teams, roped together (and even then they may fall off, but that means the Vultures get to eat!). However, when you master something, and do it well, the buzz is worth the effort. To my mind the most important skill to master is landing your ship. Until you can do this nothing else matters (how can you complete a mission, for example, if you killed yourself on landing?). It would be a good idea to go through some of the Training missions to start learning the necessary skills to survive.

Now, Golden Rule 1, which is; Never Fly if you cannot cover the REBUY. REBUY is the insurance excess on your ship, and is 5% of the value of your ship (including all upgrades, but not the cargo). Any changes you make to a ship will affect the REBUY. You can see what your REBUY is on the Status screen (normally accessed by pressing key 4 when in cockpit view, although I do not know how to access the Status screen on a console), bottom left, below Balance. If you get killed, and you can cover the REBUY, you will get a replacement ship identical to the one you lost (although the cargo bay will be empty). However, if you cannot cover the REBUY you may well end up back in a basic Sidewinder. Please do not let this happen to you, as the forum is littered with tales of woe when other Players have ignored Rule 1, and then got killed. This links to a classic one I have seen;

You will, at various stages, upgrade your ship (buying is covered in the next paragraph). Be aware that all internal equipment has numbers and letters associated with them. The number is the Class, while the letter is the Rating. Until you have a good understanding of the Class make sure (when upgrading) to fit the same Class as the unit coming out. There are stories of Players who fitted a 1A FSD to their Sidewinder, thinking it would help increase the jump range, only to find that (as the FSD that came out was a Class 2) they had REDUCED the jump range. The letter is for Rating, with E being the weakest and A being the strongest. However, there are two that confuse this somewhat. All D Rated equipment are very light (and are preferred by Explorers for this reason), while B Rated has heavy armour (which is great for combat specialists). I do not (at this time) intend to explain weaponry, as this is definitely a matter of personal preference.

When you decide to buy a new ship, try to have 200% of the purchase price first. That way you have enough for the ship, some basic outfitting, a couple of loads of cargo, and a couple of REBUYs (just in case). If you are trading in a ship, take it back to factory spec first. When you sell any ship you will always take a 10% hit on the value of the ship at the time of selling. However, if you take it back to factory spec first you get back the full amount that you paid for the upgrades (at this time, at least). Then, when you sell the ship, your losses will be reduced. For example, I have an A Rated Cobra MkIII worth 10Mcr. If I were to sell her now I would take a loss of 1Mcr. However, if I take her back to factory spec and then sell her my loss will be about 35Kcr.

One final piece of advise I have is that, when something within the Game gets boring, switch to something else for a while. There are so many different things you can do it should not be difficult to stay interested. I, for example, will alternate between Trading, RES Combat, Exploring and helping new Players in Starter Space (and there are a whole lot MORE in the way of things to do!).

Have fun, fly safely, and see you out amongst the stars. Feel free to ask any questions, we all had to learn somewhere, and those that care will answer all they can.

Hi Stokey , try searching for

Over 40s elite club

Without the apostrophe.

Look forward to see you in the community mate 🙂👍

Hell Razor5543. Thanks for the great tips CMDR especially on ship building classes, that was new to me. The only combat I've done is in training, currently I have 0% combat xp, I don't consider myself an aggressive player. I'm currently on Tycoon and Pioneer, and the one lesson I learned early in the game was starport docking, apart from the odd fine for forgetting to request docking and not pulling away in time.. A'ha. I also understand pips and reducing them from engines to shields when docking ( Just in case I do scrape something or attach a dropship to those silly ship hooking flood lights ) I can scan systems, and I'm getting the hang of , although as I explain in another post I spent a lot of time before discovering it, chasing unexplored clusters. Ship building is a bit confusing, It took me 3 days to figure out it was the power distributor and find the one to fix the " insufficient booster capacity " problem on my python. The internet can be confusing with all the jargon that I also don't really understand. thank you again for the advice. (y)

Sorry about the nonsense sentence, it's altered my post I can't edit it because it reads right again once I try , that is so weird ?? " and I'm getting use to the FSS scanner( Not, what are you doing ) " 😂

Thank you. I have only played in solo, I don't have horizons yet and I'm still finding my feet. INARA ? that's what I need a lot of help with, the jargon. A lot of sites use such acronyms and Jargon that I don't understand. Message me your PSN gamer tag and I'll add you up. Mine is Stokey1111, but I've had to restrict my friends requests to friends of friends, otherwise I get inundated with friends requests. Thanks again much appreciated.

INARA is a huge online resource,it can save you a LOT of time.Think of some kind of info you need and INARA will most likely have it.For example,it can find nearest resources,Starports etc for you. Also it has all the ships and modules on there. You can now import your current data so it makes fonding stuff a lot easier. My PSN tag is above my sig banner. You really do need to get Horizons, not only do you get access to more ships you get to land on Planets and explore them and a lot more.
here is the link to INARA

Stokey,i advise you to look at ObsidianAnt on You Tube.He has all manner of how to's on his channel and is really helpful.I just bought the Supercruise assist module and hadnt a clue how to use it(and i have been playing since ED dropped on PS4)so i looked on his channel and there it was ,a nice little tutorial. As some have said ED is a HUGE game, not only by the playable area but also the "depth" of the game.I am not that good at combat so tend to avoid it when i can,but my ship is capable of holding its own unless i get targetted by an anoconda. One skill you MUST get sorted is the "interdiction" escape. You will need to have a decent set of engineered modules to aid in manoeuvering which will make it a LOT easier.I have yet to be interdicted in Solo so have avoided combat unless its on my terms.

Bigmull, That's a huge help thank you. I shall be getting Horizons in the near future, that's certainly guaranteed, and I've sent you a friends request. Hope it's the right one there's few of you A'ha. Thanks again (y)

I do believe I'm subscribed to that channel. I've picked up a few tips from there like vertical thusting, and it helped me discover the FSS scanner. Never been caught with cargo, although I get tempted to kill them when they interdict you while planet scanning. It's annoying on 20+ probes 10- or so probes down and you get interdicted. you still have say 70-80% scanned and probes down but you can no longer see where your probes have hit and where you need to put the remaining probes when you return.

Get an advanced docking computer ASAP,it makes it a lot better and you dont crash exiting. Its a boon with my Beluga which is a big ship.It may be an idea to travel a ways to avoid other vessels in systems where you want to use the FSS its not usually too far to get out of the "bubble".Also,if you are running "delivery" missions, some of the missions carry a higher chance of being interdicted, just buy a bit of gold and see what happens,LOL.

I just want to say thank you all for your advice, web page links and friend requests. I am currently having an information overload crisis now with all the fantastic new sites and community you've shared 😂 You have been a massive help and for that I am truly grateful. :)(y)

Hello folks, I picked this game up last August and well, I wish I found it sooner. I have spent this time levelling up trade and exploration by doing starport missions. ( Currently Tycoon & Pioneer ) The problem is this game is so big I really don't know much about it at all. I have so many unanswered questions and the more I scour the internet in search of answers, the more questions I seem to find, with few answers. So basically what I'm searching for is a couple of decent folk who can help tutor me through the jargon, and immense size of the game. If you liken yourself to an Elite Master, preferably older and wouldn't mind teaching an old (40yr) padwin a few tricks, send me your PSN and I'll add you up. ( An old padwin, is that an oxymoron ?) P.S I currently don't have the Horizons season pass, however that will change in the near future with hundreds of more questions probably. Thank's, most appreciated.
LOL, Cracked me up when you stated "Old (40yr). If I had to guess, 40 is just about the norm age for most of ED player base. Right off the bat, I'd suggest obtaining a copy of Horizon, if not your only play half the game. The other half will really open up your options as to what, where, when, why and even on occasion a who.

I'm fairly competent now with docking on all stations, I had fun with the docking assist at first but found it was making me too lazy, A'ha. They have tried to interdict me, but they ain't getting my cargo :giggle: I've also picked up a trick of approaching a starport too fast beyond the 6 sec rule,, and slowly moving closer has I whiz round and round. They seem to just zip right past me, and can't lock me up, so once I'm close enough to jump out of supercruise, I'm in the safety of starport security 😅 Take that pirates 👊

You're probably right, having been raised on star wars and star trek, and a bit of red dwarf if you're uk based.. 😂 Horizons is on the cards and is my next purchase very soon, and I can't wait to explore those planets properly (y)

Enjoy mate. There are loads of tools out there to compliment the game, and plenty of experienced Cmdrs who can offer advice etc
