Ships Can you learn to love the FDL?

Why aren't we friends yet? Let's fight some time.

I'm in Colonia, if you come by you know where to find me. Hint, it's the asteroid base close to the pretty lava world.

Well the idea with the build is to knock your opponent of their target just before they fire so you want to keep your cannon shots as close together as possible and fire them first before the PA's. Also, have having the PA's lined up like that will make landing all 3 of them easier.

2 fire groups, interesting. I have everything in one and just fire them together. But I have the cannons on 1 side too, reasoning is if I hit off center it should amplify the effect. If I have one left and right the effect might cancel, but no idea if that is right. I know it works in a good way and bad way. I had a fight there I turned the opponent into a good firing solution and ate a full PA volley. Sometimes I miss the feedback rail, especially if I see somebody banking and can't really do anything about it.

The two SRB PA's will proc TC. Either way, I'd suggest using at least one SRB PA in there somewhere.

Ok now you are talking a foreign language! SRB? TC? SCB I assume is shield cell bank.

Shield cell bank firing is when you get that wave effect spreading across the shield I presume.

I tried PA’s on the Vulture and Rails on my Clipper and like both. I have never tried cannons what do they bring to the party? The only problem with PA’s I found was not very efficient at small ship kills and have been shooting a lot of Vipers and Eagles recently (don’t ask). Good against the big stuff though.

Yep, if you hit the shield during the spool up time, only a ring is spreading across the shield without the shield halo, with feedback cascade rails you cancel the shield cell bank (scb) partially or full. once the ring and the halo spread across the shield it's to late and you can just watch the shield go stronger again. spool up time is between 3-6sec depending on engineering. 5sec is for non-engineered I believe.

SRB = short range blaster, engineering effect for some weapons, it has higher damage with the drawback of more heat and lower range.
TC = thermal conduit, experimental for PAs and beams, gives a flat 60% damage increase once your ship heat is > 100%
SCB = yep, shield cell bank

Yeah I feel you. This is why I prefer the Chief and FAS. Forgot how good the FAS was until I finally used it again last night in a 4v4 against Neo, Exigeous and Picard. We almost won until me and my wing mates chaff malfunctioned and got pelted by Exigeous.

Can you drop me some "anti-FdL" FAS builds or generally effective pvp FAS build. I'm pretty mixed up whether I should use any shields on FAS or go shieldless? Hull tanked only? Any MRP's, that sort of thing.

Around in Dec '19 I took my newly built FAS for a spin during recent CG. Had a few skirmishes against medium "birds of prey", but I wasn't really happy due to frequent hull damage. 300MJ of shields it's ok for a small ships. In medium I prefer something between 600-1000. is It possible to have a pvp FAS with more shields?

Here is my build...

The FLD is kinda amazing the first time you get your hands on one and G3-G5 it, but I haven't really flown mine since the end of 2.4. Im not really one for frequent diverting of pips into sys, prefer hull tanked condas/vettes, but if Im gonna fly a medium its gonna be the FAS (Ive tried the chief and its certainly good, but something about the FAS clicks with me).

That is basically the same as my build. I do run a 4D and 3D MRP or a single 5D MRP cause my modules take a beating with a 4 and 2. So many super pen rails lol.

Here's my main build.
This is my alternative build that I've been using more and more.
You definitely want to run with shields. Running shieldless with silent running can work but with night vision and super pen rails being so commonly used it's just not that viable anymore.

There's really nothing special to counter FDL's besides landing your shots. I use 4 PA's (2 SRB, 2 efficient) with TC to maximize DPS. I love pacifiers but the FAS doesn't have good enough lats/verts to be able to orbit your opponent to maximize their effectiveness.

The more damage seeping through the shield the better. this is very effective against FDL and Mamba since they have too few internal compartments.

So I took the FDL into some CZ’s to test in in prolonged combat situation. I am running a resistance heavy biweave, which hold up quite well. Only had to take time out to recharge on a couple of occasions and 1 of which was a spec ops wing picking on me. It needs careful attention to pips to get the most out of it. It slides quite badly. Flipping round to get guns back on target you will find yourself 1.5k away easily. Not totally happy with the loadout yet. Need to get some more stuff engineered as apart from the huge laser everything else was what I had.

I dunno re; combat, but it's probably the best of the medium class ships for racing in. Very agile for it's size, although it's slow as hell - it just makes it basically easy-mode. Simple to fly FAoff, and of course it can bounce of walls without a scratch if you do mess up a corner.
Anyone getting into racing could definitely start with one and learn good technique before upgrading to an Eagle or Viper.

Why a Mamba?

Well because it's basically an upside down FDL except that it is gorgeous, it is faster, has a center cockpit and the view is spectacular. No dumb pillars.
The Huge on top is superior to the bottom one, especially for gimbals. I am still on the fence about the 3-3+1-1 vs 2-2+2-2 layout of the other
hardpoints. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages. Here's what mine looks like so far:

I must admit the Mamba looks great. Interesting build, thanks for sharing it. You are the first person I have seen post a build with a Guardian Hybrid PP. I am using one on my DBX at the moment and it is fine. Quite handy to have it as an option. Weapons are interesting mix too. A very long range weapon and the rest very short range. What was the thinking behind that?

You're welcome Fred! The only reason I'm using the GHPP is because I'm too lazy to engineer a regular one. Mine gets the job done too just fine, without serious heat issues. I use them on a lot of my ships. When I finish my other projects, I might get around to fixing her up too. Or maybe not. lol

My thinking behind the weapons? Well, the flight characteristics of the Mamba sort of dictates a joust type of fighting technique. Lots of boost-turn, fly-by real fast and pew. When over the apogee of the turn it's long range beam time and then at the pass I unload the 24 rounds from the frags. If you get the timing right it is very fun and effective. The reason I use Thermal Vent is because the two large Incendiary Frags can at times heat up a little bit and I like to keep my modules from taking any unnecessary damage. If I do get that regular PP modded, I might switch it to Oversized.
