Can YOU, Run Elite?

Just my 2cents on the forum for people with low end machines, looking to buy the game.

Let's start with my Build as a reference -

My Build - (yeah, it's not the best, try not to laugh too hard)

OS - Windows 7, 64bit
Motherboard - ASRock > G31M - S
CPU - Intel Core2 Quad-Core CPU Q8200
RAM - 2GB

GFX - AMD Radeon HD 6450 -
Pixel Shader version - 5.0
Vertex Shader version - 5.0
Dedicated Video RAM - 1.0 GB

I have played the game running everything possible on low, and all possible processes closed to save CPU, and RAM, and have come to the conclusion that Frontier should update the minimum specs.

Imo, it's the little details that make this game, running everything in low is not practical. While the game may run, it does not play (on minimum requirements).

And here's why -

The flight in-game movements, running on a minimum spec (relative to Elite) desktop feel sluggish, it's not like a stuttering lag, more a really subtle but noticeable delay of control. The overall control of the game has this subtle response to it, and you feel slower, and at a disadvantage because of it.

FPS rates -
720 - 27fps
1920 - 11fps

I fully support the company and game, it will be £50 well spent when i build a new pedigree of gaming pleasure. As it stands, if you have similar specs as mine, i recommend getting an upgrade.

I hope Frontier see this and update the minimum requirements, so it's not just runnable, it's also playable.

One love ;)

Until last year I had the same Video Card as you did. Min settings all the way and 720 resolution was the only way I could get it to a level that was acceptable. Even then frame rate was around 20 on average. That was in a modern i7 rig, SSD and 8GB RAM. Pop in a shiney new 770 and PSU and goodbye poor performance.

What you say about the subtle performance hit, is exactly as I experienced it too. But lets be fair the 6450 is an old card, the fact it actually runs Elite is a miracle in itself! :D

Wow, I totally expected a rage-post that stomps on the game, the devs and everyone else.

Sad to see your actual hardware won't let you enjoy Elite to its fullest, and I really do hope that after you get a new machine or hardware update you will rock the galaxy with the rest of us.

Do you have all drivers up to date? That's what I'm always told to do when I run into troubles with games  and then I make my bf do it for me :D (then again, don't listen to me, I'm not even sure about what I am advising you to do  )

Hope to see you out there, and seriously... have some +rep for a non-rage but constructive post. I mean it :)

*Edit: yay to the other commanders giving way better hints than I could ever come up with :)

Just a thought but do you know yaw is very slow in ED roll/pitch is used instead and keeping it in the blue spot when turning ?

OP; That card will definitely limit your enjoyment, sorry.

As to the thread title: yes I can, all on the highest settings..:p

I've been fairly impressed by how well ED runs in a machine that is only just above the minimum specs. I only have:

4 MB RAM
AMD Phenom 955 3.20 Ghz
AMD 7770 HD 1 MB RAM
Windows 7

Nevertheless, ED runs acceptably at 1600x900 at medium settings, getting 55-60FPS generally, dropping to 35-40 FPS at stations or in combat at resource extraction sites.

Hit the nail on the head here man!
Yeah, my frame rates where 720 - 27fps in open space.
1920 - 11fps in open space also.

Check Futuremark's chart for graphics upgrade options; while 3DMark isn't perfect it's a reasonable performance indicator: http://www.futuremark.com/hardware/gpu

You can easily pick up bargains from places like eBay, here are some quick options to help guide you, with approximated prices and increase in 3D performance.

First, here are some that shouldn't need a PSU upgrade:
1. Radeon HD5670 @ £22/$35 ~ 3x faster
2. Radeon HD6670 @ £50/$82 ~ 4x faster
3. GeForce GT640 @ £60/$100 ~ 5x faster

And if your PSU is at least 500W and has an integrated 6pin PCI-E cable, or you're upgrading it:
4. GeForce GTX 550Ti @ £40/$66 ~ 5.5x faster
5. Radeon HD5770 @ £55/$91 ~ 6x faster

Meanwhile, I would also recommend upgrading your RAM (to at least 3GB), but it isn't required by ED as of yet.

Hope that helps :)

my machine speca

Mine is windows 8.1 64 bit machine

Intel i5-3570k cpu @ 3.40Ghz

8 gig of ram

Ati Radeon HD 5700 series

runs smooth

Don't tease me please, this post is not intended to feed any ego's ;)
I guess i only have myself to blame for the title.

I don't even use a gfx card and it runs fine on my i7 (integrated gfx) 20 fps when at stations otherwise it is double that on medium settings.

I know the old saying, a certain game requirements are so low you can run it on a potato..... but I never expected someone to actually try it with ED ;)

seriously, that rig is not THAT bad, but your gpu is truly bobbins!.

it wont cost much to get something which will match your pc a little better.

a gtx 750ti I think would be a nice fit for your rig coming in at 100 quidsih.

sure you may nt be able to play on full, but it will be way better than you have now.

but your i7 integrated graphics are several generations (depending on which i7) better than his current card.

As mentioned above just a little graphics card push should do it doesnt have to be an $600 card. Just little more graphics power and 4 gig ram should do it.
