Can you steer your ship during Surface Scan mode?

Just checking, it's not possible to steer your ship whilst deploying the surface scan probes is it? :S

OK assuming I'm not missing something, I really think it'd be an improvement to be able to do this, why was this ability not included?

You can always exit the mode if you need to steer, but as ^^^ says : if you need to steer, you're doing it wrong ;)

Only case I tend to be multiple shooting points is ringed planets, but i probably need more practice :)

It's not possible but not required since you can lob probes to the other side of the planet.

Mostly I just exit/enter to make course corrections...

May be I need to practice more then! I did manage to get a few 1/2 way round the other side. Are you saying you can cover the entire sphere from one pass side-to-side, no steering?

Yes When probing I'm only actually in the probe screen (and therefore not in control of my ship) for a few seconds for almost any solid planet I map. (eta the biggest solid body I've done so far had a target of 11 probes and with an engineered DSS I did it with 8 - front & back then a hexagon around the horizon).

I did a couple of Gas Giants in my home system purely to get a tag on them & it took rather longer but I came back out of the probe launching screen to move the ship a few times so again being temporarily out of control wasn't a big deal.

I like the mapping part, it's a good addition. It makes finding things a little too easy but I'd much rather have this than go back to the mkI eyeball method.

Yes, as mentioned the only complications are ringed planets.

Does hitting the ring with a probe (ahem) do anything?

In my brief experiment with the Surface Scanner since beta I did see a ring shown with "hotspots" highlighted in red/orange whilst in DSS mode. Not sure if this was because I'd probed it though.

Exactly that. Useful to hit once, but then annoying for finishing the planet.

Yea. Rings were the only thing where I sometimes missed the efficiency target. Plastering a "naked" planet with probes is easy enough. But when I see that I might just be able to put a probe between ring and planet to do some mapping there, I can't resist to try. Up to now, it usually ends up in several probes on the ring and just too short. Some more practice might be in order.
.
And why the option to steer in the mode does not exist: it's a controler limit. There is a reason why they moved the new systems to new screens: you can completely re-bind controls there. Providing scanner controls in addition to the normal ship controls would not be possible on some controller options. In doubt, ask console players how cramped their controlers are already now. You just can't reasonably add any more there. So it has to be split away.

Of course, I'm part of the privileged PC HOTAS set so didn't think about our console cousins.
