Canid Pack

This is a tough one for me to pare down to a hypothetical scenery pack. Tanuki would be my personal preference first choice of course, followed somewhat closely by the bush dog. After that, though, it turns into a free for all for the coyote, black-backed jackal, red wolf, and bat-eared fox. I guess the cleanest way to handle it is to take one North American and one African species, so I guess the coyote and black-backed jackal get the nods. And then a flying fox for the exhibit is clever, I like it, it works.

Animal pack is tough for the opposite reason: I really don't feel passionately about a seventh canid. I actually do like the gray fox a good bit, but I can't be enthusiastic about it when I prefer the coyote and red wolf for NA canids and the bat-eared fox for "foxes". But I suppose in the scenario where I'm already inundating us with 7 more dogs, adding one more North American fox isn't gonna make things that much worse.

Bring on the canids! The first 2 are in my own top 15 wants, the 3rd is in my top 30, if we're just talking about habitat animals

Bat Eared Fox
Black Backed Jackal
Coyote
Raccoon Dog
Golden Jackal
Short Eared Dog (I prefer these to the Bush Dogs)
Grey Fox

I love my dogs, sorry everyone :)

If it was up to me I’d say keep the canids coming, at least 1 per pack unless not appropriate. But let’s mix up the canids to be somewhat unique compared to our current selection of canids
1. Golden Jackal
2. Tanuki
3. Coyote
4. Bush dog
5. Flying fox ( wonder if they are cool to share a WE with our current bats).

Now heres where I got to stop.
I would be happy with any other canids picked, however I’m not sure how the community would react. I think at the moment we have plenty of foxes and plenty of wolves. In particular I wouldn’t say no to red wolves, bay eared fox, gray fox or Ethiopian wolves.

Keep mentioning the jackals! For some reason, they always end up never making it into zoo games. They're such cool animals, and are the animal-spirit of one of the best known Egyptian gods.

Jackals just don't seem to be too common in captivity, at least within the US or Europe. I don't know why exactly, but I assume it's a mix of being least concern, non-native, and not visually striking enough to make up for these two facts. I like them a lot, though, and honestly wouldn't be too surprised if they made it in before the presumably more popular bush dog or tanuki. I just hope it's the black-backed jackal if we do get one.

There actually is a zoo about 3 hours from me that has them. Maybe I should prioritize going there a bit more.

While in many ways I’d rather see the black backed Jackal -it’s my go to species for my wish list- the Golden Jackal is perhaps a better choice since it would give us an animal from the poorly represented Middle East. I’d be happy with the either or the Side Striped Jackal instead as well

I actually don't understand why so many want a raccoon dog.😅
I wouldn't say no to a bat-eared fox and bush dog though
