Newcomer / Intro Cannot make myself to play it again

Gonna make this short, see if anyones has similar "problem", or advice of some sort.

Well I bought my first HOTAS and Oculus rift for this game. On tuesday I got into the game and was trying trading since that's how you start. Flying with voice attack was smooth, I avoided couple of interdictions, docking was smooth. No problem there, but chat is quiet, so it doesnt feel like MMO, and then after like first trade run, every time I found an outpost or station that has some decent demand for something I carry, they deny docking request. So I fly elsewhere and elsewhere untill finally after getting my requests denied, I'm out of fuel.
It did turned me off as it wasnt ship controling that most newbs has problem with, but lack of understatement at how to start my experience at all. Then I found on forum that you can log in solo, request docking and log back to OPEN, but that turned me even more with having to exploit it like this.
I know that the game suppose to have steep learning curve and I was preparing myself for it, but since I had tried only combat demo and then watched couple hours of experienced pilots on youtube, I thought it's gonna be decent or even fun experience like in MMOs. With meeting new people, groups or helping each other.

Well, it isn't that. I havent played yesterday and I have no desire to play Elite again today. I guess I'll just give it a couple of days since it wont run anywhere...

Docking at outposts can take some time, you just have to wait for a slot to be free. You can dock in solo then come back online but it's just a work around. Docking at a large station though shouldn't be an issue.

Just keep at it, there is that docking problem that you sometimes will find on occasion but there's that quick workaround that you already mentioned. Not ideal but better than waiting until a spot is free. I've been playing it for 2 days now and inspite of not making any money whatsoever and restarting 4 times now having a blast. Now if only I can get to imperial space...

You need to be within 6.5k or less to be able to request to dock. If you request to dock when you are too far away it will always be denied. Try playing Solo or join a private group, if the denial is related to too many players.

Oh, so that's good to know. I was wondering why I got denied sometimes. I thought it had to do with the faction not trusting me enough or something like that.
So is "station full" the only reason why you'd get a docking request denied, or are there other reasons?

Distance is also a factor. Outposts will actually say Request Denied, retry once within 7.5k...

...chat is quiet, so it doesnt feel like MMO, ...

There will never be a "zone chat" or anything like in an MMORPG - while Elite may be an MMO (though some would argue that point), it's certainly not an MMORPG. Within the context of the Elite universe, the current communication system makes perfect sense - you hail another ship by opening comms, and then you can communicate, by text or voice.

Then I found on forum that you can log in solo, request docking and log back to OPEN, but that turned me even more with having to exploit it like this.

This isn't an exploit, it's working as designed and is simply a workaround for super crowed areas in Open Play, so you don't have to sit and do nothing while waiting for a spot to clear.

I think fun is pretty subjective - there are plenty of folks who find the current game both decent and fun. But it's not a themepark MMO like WoW or any of the other major MMO releases since WoW, so if that's what you were expecting, I can see why you might be surprised. Elite is much more about using the game mechanics to create your own fun, rather than following directions given to you in order to "advance" your character.

Regarding the groups and helping each other, I suggest checking out the Dangerous Groups sub-forum at the link below - there are some dedicated PvE groups that may offer what you're looking for. Keep in mind that at the moment the social aspects of multiplayer are still in their infancy, but the devs have said they're one of the first things to be expanded in the post-release patches.

Flying around without a fuel scoop when there's fuel all around you is extremely pointless to me. Scoop the stars!

That said, there are some outposts that don't have fuel to sell. I've read one post in the last couple of days where they had to self-destruct because they reached such a system...

Yes, the first one is super cheap, and depending on your ship you'll get one that scoops 30/sec for a few thousands. Having to find a station to refuel is an incredible nuisance, even more so when you can't jump that far in the start.

best tip on these boards

Docking request denied over and over again is making me want to go postal at a major service hub!!

How did the devs not pick up on this in QOL testing??

The beginnings can be bumpy and confusing, but there is loads of video tutorials to help and these forums are very good at answering questions (just ignore the trolls and if someone gives you attitude, report them)

Stick with it and have fun!

Yesterday I started again from scratch after wiping my save. I spawned in LHS 3447 and couldnt believe the amount of new players there. It was noob system. I tried to land at an outpost and found there was a que, so repeated docking request denied messages are to be expected in such high population areas. As there were more noobs around the big stations, I decided to buy a fuel scoop..... get the hell out of LHS 3447, and head for Sorbago with a stop off in Eranin. Get to a less densely populated area of space....no more D.R.D frustrations.

Your fuel scoop activates when you get close enough to a star. You must travel above and across the surface of the star as you scoop..... while maintaining a distance that minimizes heat build up. Its something you get better at with practice. Combined with an upgraded frame shift drive which allows jumps of around 11ly or greater.... you can then go pretty much where ever you like.

I read somewhere that some stations only have 2 rockin areas for small ships. When I'm denied I find one of those areas and look at it. Once the player using that space lands or takes off I spam the hell out of my request. I you are within range and under normal circumstances, you are denied because another player is using that space. Like in real life, you can't park in an already occupied space, most I've waited is 2 or 3 minutes to land in this game. They don't offer very good explantation in game as to why you were denied.

it is [an MMO], its on the website and braben told us at the launch event and many other interviews

ppl buy it for that description

Unfortunately, I think some people on these forums think MMO means theme park or MMORPG, when it does not.

Elite is a sandbox MMO, and it's social features are barebones at the moment. Devs have confirmed bulking up and expanding those social features as one of the first post-release goals.
