Cannot use DSS

So, I've finished rebinding everything. I can now enter the FSS (which is needlessly complicated, if you ask me), and search for things while hoping something doesn't attack me while I'm not in the pilot's chair.

So then I fly to a planet, expecting to use the DSS. When I get there, the DSS indicator on the side of the HUD light up as if I can now use it (I'm in range), but when I press the button I've set it to (Secondary fire, in the fire groups), nothing happens. It doesn't matter how close I get, absolutely nothing ever happens. I gather I'm supposed to be able to fire probes, but I can't GET to that point... and I don't know what else to do with it.

I used to explore a LOT. It's what I enjoyed, I found it relaxing. Now, it's overly complicated, and not much fun at all.

(Oh, and my crosshairs has disappeared. There used to be a dot in the center of the screen so I knew where the ship was pointed, but it seems to have disappeared... if anyone can tell me how to get it back, it would be appreciated.)

Ok, got it figured out. For some reason, my primary and secondary fire were moved to the mouse. Still don't have a dot in screen center though....

Just rebind primary and secondary fire to your old buttons in the control settings? The "mouse widget" I believe is the dot on the screen, just switch that on and it appears even for hotas users. Used to be under controls/mouse controls menu.

Mouse Widget is the thing, I used to use it but switched it off an update or two ago because the widget was too intrusive in the SRV. Setting up probing was much easier than setting up the FSS Scanner Screen search settings, but if all else fails you could abandon your custom settings, select a default set & then tweak your customisation back in - it might be easier than trying to diagnose your current control set.

babelfisch, the old system was searching by eye. Having the locations just handed to you certainly is an improvement, but clearly there was a way to find them before which is still possible now and potentially still the only way to find some things.

I wouldn't call that a system.

Call it a process if you prefer, it's what I've been calling it. The process of discovery before culminated with a hunt for persistent surface POIs by eye, which was incredibly time consuming. I discovered maybe a dozen geological sites this way, never more than one on a single body. I visited more on the first day of beta on one moon in my home system.

Was that more fun in your opinion?

WRT finding fumeroles? The new one by a country mile. It makes it a little too easy but I'd rather that than too hard as it was before. I think the 'hunt the blob & tune into the signal' mechanism used in the FSS would have made more sense if it were used to search a planet surface (rather than the probe mini-game) but the planet mapping part of the discovery process has the benefit of being optional.

Which do you prefer? Too easy or too hard?

I prefer the new process, I thought that was clear by my post above. ;)

And I like your idea using the FSS mechanism to find surface POIs. A combination of probing and fine tuning would be optimal.

Sure, why not have both? There should always be more than one way to achieve a goal.
