Newcomer / Intro cant find kill mission target

I go to the target system at the time specified, scan, get a location for the target go there and look for the target...look at ships around the area....no target appearing so I patiently scan after 30 mins I log out, log in try again then give up

twice now its happened have I missed something?

After scanning the Nav beacon and given the target's location, check the Nav panel to confirm the location, which should have the orange marker. Fly to this planet and then stay in supercruise (but reduce your speed to the minimum 30km/s). There's no need to scan anything here - simply wait and the mission signal should appear after a few minutes at most. The mission signal is blue and you're given a verbal notification as well. Also note that when you accept a mission initially, there's no need to wait for the "window" of time specified by the mission info; you can go to the target system immediately.

Here's a short example from one CMDR of what Rocky-451 has described after you've scanned the Nav Beacon and received notification of which celestial body the mission target is near. Sometimes you may have to fly around the planet (without entering glide) for a few minutes before the blue 'Mission USS' appears.
There's also been the odd occasion where after flying round the planet for 5 to 10 minutes nothing appeared but flying away (~10ls) and then back again made the 'Mission USS' to spawn.

The target isn't always flying in supercruise.

Good luck, CMDR o7.

I forgot to add you can also use a Discovery Scanner (as an alternative to scanning the Nav Beacon) but the mission will only update and show the target celestial body to travel to, if the target is in range of the scanner: Basic 500ls; Intermediate 1000ls; Advanced system-wide.
