Can't get Elite to even start on new PC

Hi, guys!

I'm here because this is getting frustrating. I just finished assembling my new PC and I can't get ED to start.

I installed Steam and preceded to download and install ED. Right after the installation it took quite a bit for the launcher to come up, then after clicking PLAY it opened a black window reporting Elite - Dangerous (CLIENT) in the title bar. AFter a while (20 seconds to 1:30 minutes) it crashed, opening the crash reporter.

I tried updating nvidia drivers to the last version but it didn't work, so I tried escluding the entire Steam folder from Windows Defender but nothing.

After removing and reinstalling it doesn't crash anymore when I click PLAY. It simply won't open. 😂

Here are the specs that could be useful to list, I guess:
MOBO: Asus ROG Strix Z490-E GAMING
CPU: Intel Core i9-10850K
GPU: Zotac RTX 3090 Trinity
PSU: EVGA G2 1000W

I tried running another game and it gave no problem whatsoever, and temperature seems overall good. I don't really know where to start with this... please, I waited months to start playing again.

Your system is not functioning correctly if two installations of the same game give different results. They should both fail or both work. But at least give the same 'experience'

I would re-install the game once more. With restarts between uninstall and reinstal.

Yes, this is absolutely what's confusing me the most. It is a problem with my system, I confronted with a friend of mine that's playing without a problem. I'll try again when I get to my PC and report the results. Thank you!

A shot in the dark, but it could have something to do with VISUAL C++ REDISTRIBUTABLES and/or .NET framework, as outined here:

I tried that with no luck but I could try again and see what happens.

I tried reinstalling and it's getting to the crash report again. What should I be looking for in the event viewer? I'm tech-savvy but not that much...

Hi,
Sorry to hear of your problems...
Silly basics...
1) using steam, verify game files...
2) exclude the elite dangerous files ( default location) from aniy virus checker
3) the game requires an internet connection - allow elite dangerous through Windows Defender & you virus checker.
4) on the first run of the launcher, you'll have an email sent to your elite dangerous account email address - you'll need to login with this code..

Ugh CMDR olP

I'll answer in order:
1) Validation showed 1000+ files failed and needed to be downloaded again; the update keeps pausing, though;
2) This morning I excluded the entire Steam folder from Virus & threat protection settings -> Manage settings;
3) I just checked my network and it was wrongly listed as public, set it to private;
4) I didn't receive any email, I also checked in the spam folder, but I'm not new to the game. It's just the first installation on this system. Fresh Steam installation and subsequent Elite installation;

After reinstalling Steam I got it to start! Thank you, guys, this troubleshooting session helped me a lot. I'll reach to a profesisonal anyways to see if I did everything right or if I have some faulty component, because I'm experiencing crashes in other games, black screens/monitor reboots all of a sudden and BSOD.

Talking about Steam and ED it might be that I installed the Steam client under the wrong network settings and to get it right I needed to reinstall it. I don't know, it seems like the most probable cause.

So windows is crashing too? You build that PC or you bought it as a complete system? If the latter I would request a replacement or at least support

I built it, but I'll reach to the shop that sold me the graphics card, as they also have a general technical support and might help me.
I left the main menu at idle while I was browsing to troubleshoot my life choices and when I came back and tried to click "options" it freezed.

I'm experiencing problems that seem to have to do with my mainboard or graphics card (software or hardware I don't know yet). I'll not bother you with these as they are not strictly ED related at this point and I don't even know how obscure they can get. I fear them.

Sounds like a thermals problem or RAM that needs reseating. Might also be a drivers issue if you are using a Windows system. Difficult to know without more detailed diagnostics, I would suggest reading and more reading, as sharing such detailed information over the internet can be a minefield.

Also, if it is a new PC, did you build it, or if not, was there no technical support offered from the vendor?

I built it but as I said I bought the GPU from a physical store and they do offer technical support, so I'm feeling more comfortable in giving the PC to them for a complete hardware and software check-up.
As I wait for their ok, because Christmas season might be the worst time for such a thing, I'll check thermals while in game. RAM was reseated a couple days ago.

Drivers are all up-to-date. I might try reinstalling Windows because even the "sfc /scannow" command fails to complete.

Ultimately if it's hardware related, cables, wattages and whatnot, I don't know where to start troubleshooting and I definitely don't have the instruments to do so.

BSOD?
You could at least test your RAM, to rule out some possible reasons.
Start with Windows Memory Diagnostic and if that shows no errors, run an all-nighter* with Memtest86.

*if the RAM passes at least 4 complete passes, preferably 8 or more, without any errors, it is almost certainly good
