Newcomer / Intro Cant get mining lasers to fire

So I really have two questions:

First, how should I have searched the forums to find this answer without bothering you nice people?

Second, I replaced a fully functional 2d mining laser in my python which I've used successfully for months. On a lark I replaced it with missles for a mission just to try them out. Subsequently I replaced the missles with the same mining laser but now nothing. It just does not fire. It has to be something stupid I can't figure out. The power bar for the laser shows fully charged. I've reset and moved the fire options around my pulse lazers, scanners limpets and other equipment and those all work fine (Thrustmaster). My power is below limits as well. Everything checks out fine in the module section, the gun is active.

Any guesses or suggestions would be appreciated!

Have the firing options changed maybe? .. forward fire? target only? fire at will?

You do say it's the same laser (from storage?).. was also wondering if you might have inadvertently bought a turretted mining laser. (These require propsectors, if you're solo ming, as they're more for multicrew). Would double check and swap for a fixed llaser if poss.

??

Probably, when you put the mining laser back, it wasn't assigned to any firegoup, so no trigger will work. either that or it's in firegroup 2 and you're pulling the wrong trigger.

Turreted Laser is the problem! Thank you all!

How would I make them work if I wanted to?

In the RHS UI - Functions Tab - select turreted weapons to forward fire

Winterwalker said about prospector limpets making them work - I don't know anything about that.

Yes, it's a little second hand because I haven't tried it myself but I understand you can target the prospector, and shoot that with your turret laser, getting the desired effect. At end of day I'm not sure I'd bother with a turret mining laser though unless I expected to multicrew. Even if you're using prospectors, you only have to line the ship up to use the fixed laser, not that difficult to do.

Make sure you have at least one pip set to weapons and that the capacitor has some charge. Check the right hand panel and make sure that the mining laser is not disabled. Make sure it is attached to a fire group . Make sure that in choosing to mine you aren't in a coma or have died of boredom.

Ha! Don't listen to him OP .. mining is both Zen and has varied gameplay from surveying, to pirate killing, to equiment management, to beautiful views, to interdiction evasion, to playing the BGS (sell to boom factions you have rep with, to increase your chances of getting missions, for big sales bonuses). On top of that, the platinum you find, supports the human economy and ship builders, who will be needed .. if we are to defend against the alien threat, rumoured to be both escalating and heading this way.
