Can't get Oculus Quest 2 working with Elite Dangerous

As the title states. I can be connected either via LinkCable or AirLink and I can see the steam menu and can start the game but it ends there. The game launches on the desktop and audio is piped to the Oculus but nothing else. Sometimes I will get a big egg timer in the Oculus but I never get any actual in-game footage. I have also seen some people say about the 3d settings in ED but I don't have the options they speak of. any help would be appreciated.

That’s your problem right there 😁

What you should be seeing is “HMD Headphones” and “HMD Speakers” with a few other 3D options like Anaglyph and SBS.

For some reason the Steam version of Elite isn’t playing - I use the standalone Frontier launcher, so I’m not sure what the problem is - others have had this issue, so I hope one of them will chime in.

It may be that Steam needs SteamVR running*, or you may need to try and alter the game settings while using the Link desktop view, but something needs to be done to get the game to recognise your Q2 is connected. Sorry I can’t help - I’ve seen this come up before but can’t remember the solution off hand 😅

*Edit: I’ve had a look around and it seems you need SteamVR running - the advice I saw:

I have steam version of ED and Quest 2 and it works fine. 1) Turn on Headset 2) Turn on Steam VR 3) select the Oculus Link Option in headset 4) You should now see the steam app somewhere, click it 5) you should see ED in your library on the VR steam app.

Check that headset is connected to steam vr after you have connected to the link

That sounds like the procedure I go through when playing SteamVR games like SkyrimVR - so as long as SteamVR is running and your headset is showing as detected, you should be able to see the HMD options in the 3D drop-down menu in Graphics once you’ve started the game.

I see 3d options: Off / Anaglyph and SBS, but thats it. I tried via SteamVR and regular.
I can’t check right now, but the 3D drop-down menu used to be a scrollable one - you had to scroll down to get to the HMD options.

Also, have you checked “Allow Unknown Sources” in the Oculus desktop software options?

With the greatest respect to our non-Oculus VR siblings. Oculus users should NEVER use SteamVR when there is the Oculus runtime alternative e.g. Elite

Why? Oculus Home has noticeably better performance compared to SteamVR.

As Arioch says, launch via Frontier Launcher which will/should activate Oculus Runtime.

I would agree, but doesn't that require an additional purchase? I came from Xbox onto PC so mine was purchased after 2019, which means I can't get a free partner key to download and install.

I have no idea. When you click on the game to launch it, doesn't the FD launcher appear? When you boot from Steam, does it go straight to the game without the frontier launcher popping up or something?

When l had My rift S I always launched the game from within oculus's own portal. It then gives the options to go pancake or vr.
I'm using different hardware now so can't help sorry

I started playing Elite via Frontier launcher, then got a Rift. I asked FDev nicely for an oculus key, and that allowed me to now download via Oculus. I'm still using the same account, and I now have the option to VR or Pancake.

Try

Please forgive this if this sounds in anyway condescending but I am genuinely confused!
Like me, you bought your original key from Frontie. I have never had to buy anything from Oculus or Steam for me to play using Oculus!

I have three accounts with FD. I have uninstalled reinstalled a bunch of times.

Whenever I want to install, I just download their launcher and install from there. In the launcher, to the left of the place you select the Elite 'version' and click to 'upgrade' or 'Launch' just says 'Install'. (Once I have signed in ofc)

Once installed - let's say I have just booted my machine too:
Click the icon on my desktop which loads up the launcher (I have steam in the tray but it doesn't do anything - ED isn't in the library (I do have my og account in there but Steam doesn't know it is currently installed because I didn't install via Steam.
I have Oculus Home loaded
I then click Launch from the launcher
Oculus runtime kicks in (Steam is still clueless)

Is this different to other people?

Yes. You can purchase via Steam and you launch the game via your steam launcher. You can buy direct from Frontier and launch via the frontier launcher. You can purchase via Oculus and launch in the Oculus launcher. AND.... (deep breathe) you can purchase from Xbox / Playstation and ... well you guessed it... launch from your console. The Mac version was depreciated a while ago!!!

Sure
What I am confused about is why would any Oculus user, who bought from Frontier, need to request a key to play in Oculus VR?
I haven't needed to do that.

Didn't realise that people who buy and activate via Steam DONT get the frontier launcher. I incorrectly thought it was was of those annoying cases where even though you launch from Steam, you still get another launcher to load the game from!

The point here is you do not purchase a download. You purchase an Account.
Unfortunately most software stores are setup to sell you a download.

So, if you BUY a game on Oculus/Steam/Epic or even the frontier store, then you get access to a download and behind the scenes you've also gained access to an account.
Think about how you can switch accounts in the login screen of the FDev launcher, you don't need to download the game multiple times, you can just flip from Cmdr A to Cmdr B.

What you want to do now is to take your account that you purchased via the Frontier site, to a download from Oculus. FDev give you the ability to do that with a free key that lets Oculus know that you have already paid FDev, so you get the download (with Oculus enhancements) for free. Once you have downloaded you can login your normal Account and carry on in VR.

i.e. One payment = One account
but also One Payment + One free Key = Two Downloads

Hehe!
Thanks, I think you missed my point though. Probably down to my shockingly poor articulation. :/

I am just always confused why Oculus users would ever choose to use Steam VR when they can use Oculus Home which has noticably better performance.

I was demonstrating the install process to show that I don't need anything else to get my game running on VR via Oculus Home. I didn't need to get more keys to play in VR. Because there seems to be people who have bought a key from FD but are then requesting another key for Oculus in order to get VR using Oculus home
BUT
I haven't needed to do that. Hense my confusion.

Also, when I once went to a mate's house who has ED on Steam, I thought I saw the FD's launcher pop up too. In which case, I was thinking why can't he run VR via Oculus Home instead of being forced to use SteamVR. I now think I remembered wrong!

Are Partner Keys still given out by Frontier for Steam and Oculus? I have them but they are from years ago.
You can check if you have them by logging into your account on https://www.frontierstore.net/
There is a list on the right hand side, one of which is Partner Keys.

Just tried it and I get the Frontier launcher pop up if I start the game from Steam in desktop mode. I only play in VR though (HP G2) so don't normally see it.

I purchased FD via steam and can ONLY launch via steam and steam VR. If I would have purchased the Oculus VR headset before my purchase then I probably would have got it via Oculus. To launch via Oculus, I would have to purchase the game again.

As it sounds like running ED from Steam just loads straight into the game, which ofc makes complete sense being a Steam platform game, you might want to see if you can get a frontier key from frontier's support. (It sounds like they might do that? They certainly used to.)

Then, as long as you allow 3rd party apps from within Oculus Home, you can activate the game via FD's launcher and Oculus Runtime should kick in instead of Steam VR.

Just noticed this.

So the Frontier Launcher does pop up? I thought I remembered seeing that.

Then surely Oculus users don't need to rely on Steam VR? But can open Oculus Home and set it to allow 3rd party apps or whatever the setting is which should get Oculus Runtime to kick in?

Can you turn off steam once the launcher is open?
