Newcomer / Intro Can't get past armed shielded drone on the tutorial!

Hello,

I'm not really a gamer which is why I'm probably so bad ! I installed this for a bit of nostalgia/procrastination as Frontier was my favourite game in the 90s. But I just can't seem to destroy the armed shielded drone on even the tutorial level. I have it targeted but it just zooms past me all the time and I end up out of bounds frequently. Please help, thanks :)

I can't really help you with the specifics of the tutorial as I've never done it, but I am similar to you, and old time FE:2 player - although I've been playing this game for a while now.

Some of the tutorials can (I gather) be quite challenging as you may (for example) be using fixed weapons as opposed to gimbals, and a drone sounds like a small target.

I'd suggest getting into the real game, if you are having trouble hitting things with fixed weapons (if that's the issue), run a mission or two to get some credits and pop gimballed weapons on your loaner Sidewinder and see how you fare then, perhaps at a REZ site (stick to low or medium ones) and shoot a bunch of wanted NPC's to see how you get on and get familiar with combat. At this early stage it doesn't really matter if you get destroyed as you will just be getting back into your free ship anyway.

Gimballed weapons are a sort of assisted aim and will track your target to a degree so you don't need to be spot on with your aim. Turreted weapons are also available, and they require no actual aiming.

If you want to just practice, you may want to consider staying in solo mode then you are only playing against computer generated ships (NPC's). In open you can meet other players, and you may want to be a bit more comfortable with combat for that - anyway you have choices.

If I understand correctly it is zooming past you and you are unable to stay on target long enough to strip the shields? A lot of it is just managing your throttle and speed. Try keeping your throttle in the blue zone when turning, or even backing it all the way off for really tight turns. I also recommend pulling the nose of your ship up and getting the hang of using your vertical thrusters to help maneuver quicker.

As you get better at the basics, you can even try more advanced techniques such as toggling flight assist on and off. Don't think this is possible in the tutorial though.

Hopefully this helps, but if I can clarify anything a bit better let me know.

As for basic shield stripping; use lasers to strip shields, and kinetic weapons (like machine gun) when shields are down.

As said above. Stay with it, ED is no easy game to learn and everyone will acknowledge that.
Once you go to the starter system, stay there until you study all the controls.
Then move to solo to sharpen your skills even more, open can be a very abrupt eye opener.
AND don't fly with out rebuy. :)

Just tried it myself. It's pretty straightforward, but is a bit restrictive with the drone flying away from you if you stay behind it and the small size of the training area. Almost feels like it's encouraging reverski (flying backwards to maximize time on target against an opponent with simple tactics...occasionally useful, but a bad habit to get into as it's quite limited in it's effectiveness). That said, once you get your controls figured out and learn how to use the throttle, the weapons on your ship should make very short work of it.

I recorded my attempt and avoided targeting the drone to drag out the fight and see what it would do:

Thanks! Wow you stay so close to the drone somehow. I was going much slower than you thinking it was my high speed that makes me miss the ship all the time. Would you say you follow the scanner more or the front viewer?

Fly without rebuy?

When it starts to pull away, speed up. If it's closing too fast, slow down or reverse. Use vertical/lateral thrust to tighten or widen your turns as necessary and to help keep overall velocity in the blue zone when you can.

Would you say you follow the scanner more or the front viewer?

Ideally, I wan't eyes on the actual target, because the guns mostly fire forward, but if I lose sight of it, I'm perfectly capable of using sensors to reorient...that's what they're there for.

Stay in the blue (throttle) for maximum steerability and keep firing - lasers for the shields, multicannons when you get the shields down. i guess this is why there is a tutorial, so you can practice :)

Fly without rebuy?

Flying without enough credit balance to cover the rebuy (insurance) cost of your ship.

You can always see what your insurance cost is, it is shown in the right hand user interface and in the outfitting screen amongst others.

People have occasionally given-in to the temptation to buy a more expensive ship or / and fit more expensive equipment and spend so much they have not left enough of a balance to be able to pay the insurance - i.e. rebuy their ship if they get destroyed. Much rage-posting and ranting can follow. ;)

Hence you will often see on these fora "Don't fly without the rebuy!"
