Cant land on planets

Wow this game is getting on my nerves now, i spent 5 hours trying to work out was going on with the game and working out the warpdrive to planets etc, now i cant land on the planet on the 1st mission to get the data. It just hovers above the planet and i cant get any further in.
I must admit i have no idea is going on and if i cant get past this im trading it in. Can someone tell me how you land on the planet, in detail please because i can finally start the game properly when i know.

thanks

You need to be running the Horizons expansion.

Your ship needs to have a planetary landing suite fitted (can only be bought using horizons, comes supplied with any ship bought while playing Horizons).

As you approach a landable planet in supercruise you should see a blue circle surrounding the planet. If you only see a yellow boundary circle either it's not a landable planet or you don't have the landing suite fitted.

Once you go past the blue boundary you enter orbital cruise, with a compass & lat/lon co-ordinates. Descend further & you will enter Glide mode to quickly take you close to the surface, you fly in normal space to the ground, deploy landing gear & look for a suitable landing place, or request to dock at a planetary base in a similar way to docking in space.

Watch the G-meter, it is easy to get caught out in higher gravity. I keep full power to shields while landing.

I take it you've bought Horizons?

It's easier to post a video than try to explain how to do it, if this one doesn't help there's loads more on youtube

If it helps after 2 years some aspects are still a puzzle. Like is the trip to Hutton Orbital worth it . And were you get palladium from. Where is everybody?

Thanks everyone but are you saying without horizons you cant get on the planets? How would you play the game then guys? I have the ps4 ledgendary edition with seasons pass etc for 34.99 uk money, does it have horizons?

Yes, you need Horizons for that, but yes, that is included.
Have you redeemed your code?

Ah Hutton Orbital, everyone goes there once, some return many times (for the mug). Most don't though :)

GRIM_KOOPS,

I hesitate to ask but, did you make sure the ground underneath is mostly level? You only can land on level surfaces, the ground radar will tell you when it is good to land.

The trip to Hutton Orbital is *always* worth it.

...when else are you going to be able to catch up with the FDev forums? ;-)
(and you get two rares for the price of one: Centauri Mega Gin and the Hutton Mug to drink it from)

I need to go to Hutton one day... never made up the will to enjoy the black without anything happening for that long :) best I managed so far was like 21 Minutes befor I jump of system again :)

I've lost count of the number of times I;ve done this trip. Every new ship Cmdr Jintosh buys goes there to have its picture taken, and I helped with the original CG to get the Hutton Mug into the game. My last trip was for the rare CG that allowed me to finally buy a type 9, which still has to make the trip out, but that can wait until I've got Cmdr Jaeniez safely ensconced in her new Imperial home on the PS4 :)

OP, I feel you. I had my first large bounty (250K) sitting in my ship and tried to land on a planetary base (not even the planet, the actual base) for ever. Eventually just gave up and found a space station.

Here's a video.

Doh. Thanks. That arrow on the blast shield is deceiving. Also, the blast shield in front of the ship now makes very little sense.

I'm on a PC but if you have Horizon and a similar menu that we do, insure that you select Horizon as you should have at least three choices. One without Horizon, one with, & one with the ternament mode.

You mean the launcher?

Don't get that on PS4, you start the game from the dashboard and it loads straight into the main menu, CQC is accessed through there as well, I bought the version with Horizons included, didn't need to redeem any extra codes or anything, just started the game and had the option of 2 sidewinders, one with the planetary approach suit and srv bay etc and a bog standard one like from when I first bought it on PC, it didn't make it clear though so there's a chance anyone who's never played on PC could pick the bog standard one as their first ship.

I wish I had known this before the first time I tried to land on a planet. The approach seemed to take forever as I supercruised *around* the planet only to give up. :D

There needs to be a journal called "Adventures of the New Pilot" to let us new pilots vent about our stupid mistakes. LOL

On the other hand, you may have horizon and the data you seek is at a beacon above the planet. The planet was utilized as a reference point to get you close to the beacon. Hint: Does the yellow marker on the planet follow you? I mean, if you go in one direction for a period of time while close to planet, does the vector seems to follow you. If so, the data you seek is on a beacon above the planet. There are planets whereas no one even with horizon can land on. You'll get about 3.5 above it and just stop.

Like the other's have stated, in addition to needing the horizon package, you'll need a plantery module, generally it comes with every ship. But it can be removed thus making the slot available for something else. I accidently sold myne once and forgot, had the same problem. Went to a station, bought one and problem solved.

My guess is: Because of the games mechanics, one is not offered a mission unless their ship can handle it. Thus you were giving the mission because your ship has the capibilities, but either, the data is above the planet or you somehow eliminated your planetary landing mod.
