Elite / Frontier Can't launch from space station

Huh... not a very good start! Two jumps, 200 creds, some weird messages about having a broken light and I get chucked out of the game for stealing my space ship. @!-#
Life is going to be tough. I wish I had listened to my mother when I was young...

Hit "p" to pander the *****.

Yes DraQ, I have discovered that now. So the protection is still active, just disguised by a different message where the answer is always 'P' :)

Yeah.
Also, if you don't like the opengl mode, you can switch back to the original using Ctrl+E.

Well! I restarted a week ago and have now played just 4 game years and have 8 million credits and a Panther worth 2.5m... but I am still harmless, I have not been fired at once, nor have I fired at anything either. I suppose that having nothing but a automatic pilot to leave room for trading has something to do with this. I think that is enough in the bank so I shall change ships and go for kills. I have not seen an anaconda in my travels but I do get damage almost every time I dock with the Panther so size has its drawbacks.

Seriously?
So you've just been doing the sol <-> barnard's star run or something?

I'd find that immensely borning, part of the fun is finding out that you've bitten off more than you can chew, and trying to kit out an inferior ship so that it fights well.
In your flying fortress combat will be slow and all but risk-less.

Yep, you guessed it, sol - barnards star and it was boring but profitable. I now have an asp reasonably fitted out so I will see where I go from here.

Van Maanen's-Tau Ceti is even more profitable, while just as safe.
You'll have to know who you can sell contraband, though.

I tend to not do milkruns, though. It's much more fun to hop into properly equipped Asp and go exploring, doing high risk jobs or simply putting your ship in orbit around some gas giant in Phekda and blow incoming pirates with your laser.

I find the easiest way to start out is with low-risk package delivery missions.

Buy something small with 25-30G thrusters fully outfitted, and you'll be running circles around larger ships.

I just completed a delivery mission worth ~$120k in a sidewinder. If I'd used anything larger I would have been blown to smithereens in mere seconds. It was no easy feat mind you, and I had dispensed all of my chaff before it was over.

Trade-runs are only worthwhile if you have a large cargo hold, or smuggling illegal goods. Otherwise it will take a very, very long time to make any progress.

I just dumped all my equipment except automatic pilot, found a safe milk run and upgraded as soon as I could. This way I started with extra cash and more space,,, right the way up to Panther.

Bad move. Even on milkruns, you should have at least one shieldgen installed. Saves the expenses of repairing the hull after your autopilot attempts to park your Panther sideways.

Hmm I see what you mean, With the Panther I sustained 5 tons of damage about half the time so that is about C100 per trip... but I make about C300 on each ton of robots so I'm in profit with no shieldgens??? Another interesting fact, if you have no equipment it is far cheaper to upgrade to the same ship than to have a deluxe service - same cost as an engine service for Panther.

On my original problem "Can't launch from..." I have gone back to my original Anaconda and requested launch as usual. If I then hit 100X stardreamer I am straight out without crunching. 10X stardreamer does not work but 100X does.

That's because you were never unlucky enough to smash your drive while docking. :]

Besides, I really recommend Tau Ceti - Van Maanen's route.

Just fill your cargo hold with luxuries and booze (visit all ports on Taylor's Colony and Gilmour Orbiter above it if you have to) and jump to Van Maanen's to sell them on black market. You can bring all kinds of legal (in Van Maanen's) tech equipment like computers on your way back. This won't bring you as much profit as carrying robots from Barnard's to Sol, but smuggling contraband to Van Maanen's will more than make up for that.

You'll neeed atmospheric shielding (or very steady hand, cool head and lot of time to waste, and that's only with some versions of JJFFE, I think) if you want to land on Taylor's Colony though.
