Can't listen to anything outside of ED while game is running

Has anyone else experienced this? I used to often let podcasts, music, or YouTube videos play while playing ED. But since 2.2, no audio from any external programs seems to work while ED is running. Very frustrating; ED's music is great and all, but I need a change occasionally and ED is great to do while listening to a podcast. I think this is a pretty common thing to do, so I'm a bit surprised I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere. Do I need to change a setting somewhere, or what?

Might be a setting thing but can't help you on which one. I listened to my iTunes playlists prior to 2.2 and can still do that now with no probs.
I'm sure someone with more technical knowledge will be along shortly to provide a solution....

Cheers

Elite may have taken express control of your sound chip - you can check that in audio settings in control panel. Try unticking it and see if you get audio from other applications back. You might get audio problems though - in which case tick it back.

Update your audio drivers anyway.

Win10 web browser MS Edge by any chance?..if you search 'Internet explorer' which is still on the system after the Win10 dl & use this instead, it should work!

Looking for what your referring to, but I'm not finding it. Where in Control Panel would this be? I'm in Windows 7 still, if that's relevant. I will update my drivers though.

That's not it; I still have Windows 7, and use Chrome. Additionally, browser audio isn't the only thing affected. Audio from iTunes and Napster (formerly known as Rhapsody; a legal music streaming service, basically like Spotify) can't be heard either. However, interestingly, if I'm listening to a track in Napster while starting up Elite, the track continues to be heard. But as soon as the track ends and moves on to the next, sound stops. It appears to be playing back (and YouTube video will also continue to play, just silently), and if I look in the Volume Mixer it shows that audio is playing. But all I can hear is Elite's sounds.

EDIT-- Okay, so it might not entirely be Elite. I generally run my sound through a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 audio interface. I have it set up to record music to my computer easily, but I generally use headphones connected to it for the advantage of an audio (some games, like Skyrim, won't let me adjust my computer's volume level while the game is running). But I switched to external USB speakers, and audio worked as normal; could again listen to music while Elite is running. Switched it back to the interface, and the problem was back. But the issue still seems to have to do with Elite, as I can hear music as normal while running other games.

I guess the USB speaker has it's own soundcard, settings aren't shared between drivers/devices.

- Right-click on the white speaker icon located in the system tray on the Windows task bar near the clock.
- Choose Playback Devices
- Select the audio device that you would like to adjust
- Click Properties
- Choose the Advanced tab
- Uncheck the Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device box (both boxes will be disabled now)
- Click OK.

This didn't work either :/

I'm really bad at explaining things. Try unticking these boxes.

Oops sorry, nevermind.

No, no, you explained it perfectly well; it just seems that that wasn't the problem. I unchecked the boxes, but the same issue happened. Furthermore, I looked at the settings on the USB speakers, and they were checked, despite them not having that issue. I may need to just submit a support ticket or something.

At a push - as Elite allows voice comms, it may appear to Windows as comms activity.

It's probably not going to change anything - but worth a try.

Hmmm - I'm kind of stumped. I've not used one of those USB mixer interfaces - it may be a setting involved there but I wouldn't know where to start.

You might get somewhere experimenting with lineouts from your PC to the interface inputs and see if that changes anything.

If you are on Windows 10 look for something called Background Apps under Settings. Then find Edge and enable it. Restart the browser and that might fix it. I had this same problem only a few days ago.
