Can’t mine asteroids

Hey everyone!
I’m a super new player and having some problems with mining, that I hoped you can help me to crack.

I am so dying to mine a rocky asteroid from a planet ring (Droma 3), got mining lasers, scoop, empty inventory. No matter how much I’m firing the mining beam at asteroid - nothing breaks off.

I jumped back in mining tutorial, fired mining laser and still could break it off.

Is this some glitch, or am I missing something??
Thank you for your help everyone in advance!

is that particular asteroid depleted?
are you close enough?

and you're certain your using a mining laser, not a laser beam? only reason i ask is you said fired the "mining beam", which might suggest you fitted a laser beam to the ship?

also look in your contacts tab as the chunks sometimes break away from your field of vision depending upon which ship you use.

Don't forget to equip a refinery, and limpets (plus collector module) to collect the chunks, it will help you out a lot ;)

If you want look at my youtube channel... I have a sidewinder mining video on it... look if you use the right modules for mining. The channel name is Grimulas... I hope it helps you cmdr...

Dromi 3 has rocky rings. You don't want to be laser mining rocky rings. You want metallic rings for that in pristine reserve planets. Here's a neat tool for finding what you want, they also have a tool for targeting specific types of ores.

Two possibilities, both unlikely though:

1) Too far away - but the HUD makes that clear
2) Asteroid already depleted, and you can't tell because you're in the n00b zone.

Or maybe you broke your sensors so you can't see them? Even less likely 🤔

You need :
  • Prospector Limpet Controller (identify what an Asteroid has to offer and significantly increase yield)
  • Collector Limpet Controller(s) (collect the Fragments that come off Asteroids when mining)
  • Mining Lasers (you have these; watch out for Mining Laser Turrets intended only for MultiCrew - those need to be setup for "Forward Fire" in the right Ship panel, otherwise they won't work when you're alone in your Ship)
  • Abrasion Laser (Optional, if you wish to mine Surface Deposits)
  • SubSurface Missile Launcher (Optional, if you wish to mine SubSurface Deposits)
  • Seismic Charge Launcher (Optional, if you wish to perform Core Mining and crack open Core Asteroids)
  • Refinery (required to process any collected Mining fragments - not to be confused with a "scoop" , i.e. Fuel Scoop)
  • Limpets in the Cargo Hold (for the Limpet Controllers)

Keep in mind Mining Lasers have a max. Range of ~500m, so you must be close enough.
With a Prospector Limpet fired and landed on the Asteroid and Targeted, you can read how much percent of the Asteroid you're mining is still left - and get an audible "Asteroid Depleted" Message once it's mined dry.

Reads like an equipment fail to me. During training your ship is already equipped, you might have overlooked something.

Mind sharing your ship build?
You will get an Inara account sooner or later (www.inara.cz), so after imported your Frontier Account therein, go to "My fleet", select your ship -> Details -> Export to Coriolis and post that URL.
Example: https://coriolis.io/import?data=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
Of course you can diretly go to Coriolis and manually set your modules.

The absolute minimum build for mining is a mining laser, a cargo rack and a refinery.

If you have no prospector drones, you still can blindly select an asteroid and exploit that, your gain will just not be that high.
If you do not have a collector drone, you can fly your ship to collect the nuggets with your cargo hatch.
Without a prospector you will not be able to find the cracks for core mining and not see the subsurface deposits, but you still can see surface deposits and shoot them with an abrasion laser.

As for the turret firing mode, on a PS4 I have seen no difference between fire-at-will and fixed target setting.
Both fire the mining laser jsut fine and break of chunks.
That turret target setting only affects my offensive other turrets (guns and beam laser) and I leave that well alone (set to "Target only" currently) to defend against pirates.
If this changes in multi player, I have no idea.

From actually reading the OP and POV its probably either too far away or not actually firing the Mining Laser, check Right Hand Panel to put it into firing group and then make sure you're in that firing group.

You can laser mine those roids yes, its highly unlikely every random asteroid is actually already depleted, you would see the white (if not changed) bits on your radar even if you couldnt pick them up coz no refinery or no limpets.

Try going to a Res Site and seeing if the NPC ships are blasting off chunks and you can see them or not on your radar.
If you can see try on the same roid theyre blasting and see if it works. Theyll stop firing once its depleted.
You will only get junk chunks but it will isolate the problem if there is one.

If still no luck either its possibly a bug. although my first sentence is most likely. GL.

As for the turret firing mode, on a PS4 I have seen no difference between fire-at-will and fixed target setting.

Its only instructions for the Turreted auto-fire weapons specifically when not being used by MC or when youre alone. Fire at will is dangerous with police or friendlies around (CZs for example) around as one stray shot can lead to them being targeted literally behind your back and a stray shot fly away no problem turns into a bounty and less-forgiving SC police and stations, especially as they all turn red and instantly become a legal target for the same auto-fire.

When you press fire on Target Only the turrets will only fire if they can hit that target, if you press fire on Fire at Will youre basically giving the turrets open permission to hit anything in range. Theoretically the Mining Lasers would join in the fight if in the firing group but that would just be waste of energy in reality. Even if getting pirated while mining its better to keep mining the roid for chunks while escaping or tanking rather than switch to the pirate for no damage while doing the same, in theory.

I tend to think of it as either focussed fire or an enemy attractor. On the T9 I often want enemy attractors so I dont have to chase them, I want them to come to me for ease.

Also check left hand panel - Contacts tab when mining to make sure you havent set it to 'ignore' or you wont see them on radar either.
