Cant play ED anymore, its partly VR's fault!

I used to play ED a lot before, I have a dual monitor set up so I could play ED and watch TV at the same time. This would help stem the boredom of Super Cruise.

Then I got a HTC VIVE.

Strapped it on and put on ED - OMG what an initial experience. The scale and the immersion is still really cool.

Problem now is, I cant play ED anymore because i cant play ED without my VIVE, and I cant watch TV with my VR headset on; and I cant play ED without watching TV. Im stuck in an infinite loop!

Traversing Super Cruise without TV is a nightmare i never want to re visit!

Im hoping between now and the QOL updates someone can create an add on that allows me to watch TV in VR without big performance or quality hits.

Thankfully I've lost interest in the game over the past few months, sometimes I get the urge to give it another go, but I just cant because I know i have to use Super Cruise without TV!

Poor me right? [big grin]

The Vive has a front facing camera, no? Can it be used whilst in-game? ;-)

Unfortunately not, if you press the camera button it greys out the game into the backgroud, the second camera option turns it into kind of like a motion sensor mode, where the outline of all objects are different shades of blue.

Yeah, I use OVRDrop.

Performance is decent, it used to be awful.

Is used to be a free bit of software => https://github.com/Hotrian/OpenVRDesktopDisplayPortal which I believe you can still grab and test out.

OVRDrop took that to a paid for version and added a bunch of features/functionality/improvements.

OpenVRDesktopDisplayPortal is now OVRdrop! The new version only supports Windows 8 or above, but is now GPU accelerated and capable of capturing in 1440p and above at 60+ FPS. A number of new features have been added, including an additional VR overlay that lets you switch target Applications as well as full monitor capture support and more, but the most significant change between this version and the Steam version is the capture method.

Not really going to be watching telly as such but it can overlay another window into the game, so if you are able to view through you're computer you're good to go.

I dont really want to pay a tenner for something that might not work, does the free version still work and is it ok performance wise?

Give audiobooks a try, this is how I manage to keep sane during long exploration trips and it works like a charm.

Unless your entire gameplay consist of fetching mugs from hutton orbital.
I can't really see an issue.

Put on some tunes, turn the hud off.
Rock/chill out.

I too used to watch Netflix while playing, but I get far more enjoyment out of the game in vr cause it forces me to PLAY THE GAME and fully pay attention to it rather than do three things at once and not really enjoy any of them.

I guess thats my main problem, I dont really enjoy the game anymore and kind of forced myself to play it because there's hardly any competition out there at the moment in terms of space exploration/trading games. :(

If you had a oculous , instead of a Vive. Then you could have used " helov ". It can display most , if not all videos in the rift. I do know that the programer is working on making it vive compatible.

There's a few free scripts out there that allow you to display anything on your desktop, in the game. I've used it for youtube, in Elite, but the performance impact is too great. I'm at work, so I can't think of the link, but I'll paste it later.

If you find a game is so boring that you have to watch TV to enjoy it you should probably be looking for another game to play.

I am doing, just the space sim genre is a bit sparse at the moment.

SC will come out in 2020
Dual Universe and Infinity battlescape are still in alpha
I don't really like evochron mercenary
Everspace is too arcade style

The search continues..
