Been playing ED for a couple of years now but there is one recurring issue that makes me stop playing this game everytime. This is not some subliminal ‘I hate Fdev!!11!’ Topic, I’m genuinely looking for a solution.
Whenever I try doing missions with a couple of friends, a random Wing member will get a 99% certain disconnect or black screen during the play session. This usually happens when we accept (a mix of) (wing) massacre/assassination missions and then go to the target system and drop from supercruise. This has been an issue in countless gaming sessions
I tried winging up with a friend the other day, to do massacre and assassination missions. I read somewhere that having ‘too much’ (whatever that is) missions and then doing a wing will increase the likelihood of a crash. So I only accepted 3 missions.
We winged up, went to target system, I dropped from SC at a mission signal source, and BAM black screen of death (you know the one where your screen dimms 90% and doesn’t respond to anything anymore).
I’m really clueless as to why this game runs multiplayer so bad for me.
To summarize:
FWIW my PC specs:
The issue seems to occur almost every time I’m in a wing with at least 1 other CMDR in Private Group play. Having a couple of missions active exponentially increases the likelihood of a crash.
When NOT in a wing but playing in Private Group, the issue doesn’t occur. Even when having 20 (wing) missions active.
Even if there’s no one who can think of something that I could change on my end, if there’s anyone who hasn’t experienced these problems ever, would you be willing to wing up with me some time to try? Just to rule out that one of the different friends I play this game with is the culprit*.
* I once had 2 friends come over to my place to play ED. I created port forwardings to all our PC’s (all on different ports obviously) and set ED to use the corresponding port for the game, but we would still encounter these issues... So maybe there is still something wrong on my end..?
EDIT: I have reached out to Frontier support in the past, but the suggested tests and fixes were very generic (“make sure there’s no background programs running” and “update drivers and OS”) so that didn’t really get me anywhere.

To summarize:
- Cable/coax 500 down/50 up internet connection
- Static ipv4 address
- The Modem (which was provided by the ISP) is in ‘bridge mode’ so it doesnt do any routing/firewalling/NATing; it gives the public ipv4 address to my router…
- .. which is an Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X (2 years old), has uPNP enabled, no content filters or traffic shaping or VLANs or anything of that sort
- Is configured to forward port 5100 to my PC (which has a DHCP reservation for its IP address so it’s always the same. I have been using a static IP address as well but that doesn’t change anything)
- There’s 3 switches in between my PC and the router (all TP-link gigabit switches) everything is wired connected CAT6 (entire LAN is Gbit)
- ED is configured to use port 5100
- A 3rd party tool verified that my PC is reachable from the public internet on port 5100
- I have the latest drivers and OS version
- In the years I’ve been having this issue, I’ve reinstalled my PC several times. Sometimes I would ONLY install the required drivers, Steam and ED to rule out that any other application is interfering
- maybe worth mentioning: this is the only game I’m encountering these connectivity issues with. I play approx 10-15 different games a year (some of which also use P2P networking) and I never faced these issues with any game I played (unless they were in early access or alpha and clearly stated that there were multiplayer issues; such as Satisfactory)
FWIW my PC specs:
- Ryzen 7 3700X
- 16gb RAM
- 1tb SSD
- GTX 1080 Ti GPU
- MSI B450M Mortar Max (using the onboard LAN)
- Windows 10 x64 (latest version)
