I know its rubbish because its just the most recent of a series of desperate lies from people who've wazzed away their credibility.

Its rubbish nobody wants to see it : rotten tomatoes pull the fake pre-release reviews

Y'see, you're the one repeating desperate lies to bolster credibility there.

Nobody posted any "fake pre-release reviews".

Rotten Tomatoes had a facility to allow people to state whether or not they were interested in seeing a movie or not.
Many prejudiced hacks misrepresented this as "review" feature instead.

It's also worth considering that RT is partially owned by a subsidiary of Disney and it'd certainly be in Disney's interests to suppress negative commentary.

And then there's also RT, itself, suggesting that they're considering removing fan reviews entirely because they apparently think it's more appropriate if people rely on listening to the opinions of professional fil-critics (who have a vested interest in always providing positive reviews for fear of forfeiting access to future moview releases) instead of listening to what the actual audience thinks.

So, we have a website which gained success by providing a place where people can read reviews from the paying audiences rather than paid critics who are now considering curtailing their entire original purpose and, instead, just echoing the reviews which people can read anywhere in the MSM.

All a bit Orwellian, if you ask me.

If they kill user reviews its because of the saddo's who tried and failed to game the system.

Who decides when people are "trying to game the system" and when they're simply expressing sincere opinions?

I mean, personally, I'd say any hack who gave TLJ or Ghostbusters 2016 a positive review was "gaming the system" and then, when they accused anybody who disagreed with them of being a sexist, I'd absolutely say they were "gaming the system" yet again.

The fact that more and more movies, recently, have such a glaring disparity between the "offical" reviews and audience reviews suggests that if anybody's "gaming the system", it's the hacks, in a bid to cling on to their goody-bags and early-access screenings.

And to be completely clear, ironically enough, I don't think any of this would really have made a difference to Captain Marvel.
The oddballs could all have had their pre-release hissy-fits, the reviewers could have produced their "7/10" reviews and the audience response (and the revenue) would go on to correspond with that opinion - thus showing up all the pre-release nonsense for what it was.

There was no need to indulge in censorship or statistical manipulation.
It all just ended up painting Rotten Tomatoes as censorious corporate shills with no faith in their own product.

Issue with Rotten Tomatoes, which came to fore with Captain Marvel, was that people would leave (poor) reviews well before the movie even came out: Here according to the Atlantic.

:D S

As usual the truth is probably somewhere in the middle: Marvel is obviously a meh movie and probably generated meh sales. I really doubt that all of the the ticket sales were fraudulent, but on the other hand I just am not buying the "overwhelming success story" being generated about the movie--it flat out in NOT doing well where I live, a micro city of 30,000+ and a surrounding area of another 30,000 or so, enough of a population to warrant a pretty decent sized theater in a major remodeled arts district. It hasn't had more than 5-10 seats booked on any day for any showing since it debuted. This is an observation from lurking the cinema's website to keep track of seating assignments since it released. That doesn't translate to the producers faking a billion dollars globally or whatever the number is, but it seriously implies that all of the reports about this movie being a runaway success are being tarted up to distort the picture somewhat.

It's funny to me seeing the people willing to believe the fraud and scamming of individuals, but cannot conceive of a closed loop system between Rotten Tomatoes and Disney indulging in similar behavior. Why all the trust in big business, guys? Rotten Tomatoes exists literally to tell you what to think about the entertainment industry--probably be best if you didn't just guzzle their koolaid without at least a teensy little touch of skepticism.

You can (and should) apply the truth is somewhere in the middle the first time around. This has all been going on repeatedly for years now though.

The conspiracy theories are funny but at this point nobody sane really believes any of it.

If you take your nostalgia glasses off all the star wars films have huge holes in them, not to mention dreadful dialogue. They are all fun films, but you need to channel your inner twelve year old to enjoy them same with super hero movies.

^This. I like Sci-Fi. Star Wars and Star Trek. But I also know to give them a lot of leeway when it comes to logic and reality. If one wanted to, they could rip apart any of the old movies and make a good living at it. Just ask Red Letter Media.

I probably should have warned you about the koolaid a while back, because it looks like it's too late now.

Nobodies going to see it : release ticket sales numbers

The theatres are empty : check available seating

They gave secret free tickets away just to girls : conspiracies don't work when you get the public involved

Its not a financial success : release financials

Those are fake sales : lol get stuffed you nutter

It might go the same was as the expanse and keep cast members and such, especially the lead he's great. Having said that the series could have been a lot more punisheresque. He should be executing every very naughty person who crosses his path with not a hint of inner turmoil beyond will my ammo last out.

Yes name calling, well it didn't last long did it, i won't report you because i can take it. but you should cool down a bit son, it's the internet grow a spine LMAO!

no offence take, just bring it down a notch shall we...

Its fairly obvious I was listing already disproven Captain Marvel cinematic comedy conspiracies and the obvious counters to them. Hence my use of the phrase "series of desperate lies". By using the phrase "get stuffed you nutter" in response to the latest conspiracy I'm simply continuing the process to the only logical conclusion.

If you insist on feigning outrage clutching your pearls and swooning at my very sensible reaction to laughable internet cobblers I can always fetch you the smelling salts. It seems a little contrived however.

You know that already though, its why you had to cut most of my post away to remove context.

Are you triggered ;) I feel a spontaneous self combustion coming up, however let's leave it, we will never agree, so if you're good I'm good too.

I'm starting to get the idea that Stigbob is Brie Larson in real life:)

Durn tootin.

I like sci-fi and superhero films. Its becoming impossible to discuss them without it becoming the new front in a culture war I think is all a bit silly.

Not triggered but definitely becoming very intolerant of other peoples agendas.

No Stigbob, you are triggered. in fact, I'll go so far as to say you're the only one in this thread who cares. You're the only one who keeps going on and on and on about it. You're the only one in this thread pushing an agenda.

There's better things to discuss than Captain Marvel, ,more important issues to get mad over, and more interesting stuff to be entertained by.
I'm sure you'll reply to this, you can't stop yourself, but one last time, I beg you, let it go, move on.

Arguing against transparently bonkers conspiracy theories isn't an agenda.

To clarify it for you I find conspiracy theories really funny, but they've become so prevalent thanks to other peoples agendas they get in the way of film chat now.

they get in the way of film chat now.

No, That's you ... other people are and have tried to talk about the film, but you keep turning the discussion to "Imma angree at people who don't agree wiv meh".
I can't be bothered to look back and see if you've actually discussed the film itself, but you are trolling people in this thread, and I am tempted to report your posts because it's long past time a moderator stepped in, but people have been too kind to you up to now.
