There have been many requests for this feature, that was also already part of the initial concept, see the DDF thread about a In-Game Log.
Here are just a small (and by no means complete) collection of threads, regarding and requesting this topic:
Thinking about my current problem, where I got lost and currently cannot figure out my way back, I really want to raise awareness again, that this is an important thing.
Please start with a small Commander's Log asap.
For starters, it would be totally okay if it would only list the Systems you jumped in (Name and Date/Time, perhaps with a direct option to calculate a route to the system from your current location), and Stations you docked in (Name and Date/Time, and perhaps an option to select this as navigation target when you're in that system).
This can then be extended over time to show all events happening in that system (i.e. all trades, ships killed, bounties gathered, loot collected, missions completed, promotions etc.) hierarchically under the system / station node. It then could later on also be extended to support search functionality etc.
