Hey, guys!

I've done a little bit of digital cartoon artwork in my time, and thought I might throw together a quick picture for Elite. I only spent about 5-10 minutes on this one, so it's very simple, plain and far from my best, but I hope you enjoy it anyway.

I would really like some feedback on this, and would like some ideas for the next one I can do. Bear in mind, it might take me a while to make another as I'm right in the middle of my GCSE exam period, and this is just what I'm choosing to do in my spare time. (That's right, GCSEs. I'm 15, and unlike the vast majority of users here who played Elite back in the 80s, I've only recently discovered what a marvel it is!)

Thanks again for checking this out, and I look forward to hearing back from you!

Great job, i wish i could throw together something so good in 5-10 minutes.

that style would make a great comic strip and i'm sure you could find plenty of willing contributors - add a speech bubble and get forum users to post ideas for what it should contain.

from your post i gather you plan to do more when you have time (GL with the exams btw) so it could turn into a fun activity, just the sort of thing i set up elitestories.co.uk for ;)

We'd need a name for the comic.

How about these for ideas:

"Elite: Barbigerous" - One man's quest to find a razor in deep space?

"Elite: Immorigerous" - GalCop's attempts to issue Space-ASBOs against delinquents?

"Elite: Lanigerous" - Space sheep! (No?)

"Elite: Palpigerous" - Specifically for the Thargoids :D

A web comic, huh?

A web comic is certainly something I'd not considered, but it's an interesting idea. I might look into that. If anyone is interested in lending a hand with that, I'd love to hear from you. Until someone can assist me with a longer story, I might start with some shorter comic strips.

Thanks for your awesome and encouraging feedback. Don't stop! I love hearing from you all.

Considering the context how about Elite: the next generation :D

All it needs is someone to start it off, as Allen's post shows there is plenty of talent out there.

I'd put a title of 'somewhere in deep space...' on this one and wait to see what's suggested - pick the best 4 or 5 cell scripts to render.

not bad for 10 minutes work, I would have been about 14 when I got into elite so don't worry about age around here because Elite has made us all 15 year olds again,

try and get into photoshop as that will enhance your artwork.

Comic Strip

You guys will (hopefully) be pleased to hear I have begun work on a comic strip. It's going to be a short one, about 3-4 panels, just to test the waters. After that, who knows where it'll go?

To give you an idea of perspective in terms of how long this might take me, I have two hands and most of a head in panel 1, and that's been about a 20 minute job alone. It might be done at some point this weekend, but we'll see.

How about making a piece of artwork to illustrate the drabbles?

Most of the drabbles leave you with a picture or scene in your mind, so draw that.

Great work, dude. Great to see a "younger" commander taking an interest in this franchise, and contributing to the Greater Universe!

Looking forward to your webcomic. I did a webcomic myself for three years so here's some tips.

Mobius is a fan of photoshop, but it's expensive so if you're looking for a cheaper alternative I can recommend Paint Shop Pro or the freeware GIMP.

I use Inkscape almost exclusively for comic drawing as it's a free vector package (SVG based) that allows easy modification of the artwork without having to edit pixel by pixel.

Hints and tips: when you draw a character or ship, keep a stock set of poses or actions to save you time later. Then when you need to draw a similar pose all you have to do is move some elements around rather than draw it all again from scratch.

Good luck and if you need any help (or collaboration) please let me know!

:)

Flickr

Until I get a more permanent place for these, I have decide to post any and all of my Elite related pictures, that's everything from one-off pictures such as the Cobra in my first post to a full-fledged web comic, on my new Flickr profile! You can find it all here.

Watch this space for some new pictures. I got one in the pipework now, and an idea for another one right now. I'd be more than happy to get talking to some people about storylines for a series, but it's doubtful that much will be happening until after 19th June, as that's when my exams end and my life gets that little bit more fun :D

Thanks for all your support, and I sincerely hope it continues through to Flickr and beyond. You guys are awesome!

Oooohh, dear

I've got a 3 panel comic strip in the works at the moment, and so far I'm not too sure about it. It looks a bit naff, in all honesty. I don't want to ruin the surprise, but it might be worth posting what I have on here so I can get some feedback on how I can make it good. I don't want to say something's finished when it just looks like something I've just scribbled down.

What do you think? Should I finish it, post it and then get feedback, or get some as I go?

absolutely... if you're needing some feedback get it up here.

plenty of very talented people on here for great advice..

Here it is. Let the shame begin...

Here it is, guys. The first panel of my first comic strip. As you can tell, robots are involved. This is just so I can get some feedback on what I've done so far. Nothing here is finished. There is no background, and everything is just very bland.

My thoughts are that the hands point too far downwards, and should point towards the camera some more, the body is just a bad shape and I have no idea what to do with the head.

Please, everyone, be as critical as you can be!!

To be honest not that much wrong at all, the hands well its a robot.

The only thing of question is that Cyborgs are outlawed in ED... so im not sure what level of droids are acceptable.. but equally as a fan creation it don't matter jott!!!

I say go with it, the lines are crisp the picture is obvious... the hands could be better OR make them look like they've been disconnected in the clamps.. with wires etc..

Im sure mobius can offer more technical advice..

The idea behind this particular comic strip was the robots that the commanders trade. He's neither cyborg or AI, because, like you said, they are outlawed. However, I did want to portray some level of simulated emotion.

If you really think it's fine, I suppose I'll continue to do what I'm doing. But, like I've said, all feedback is welcome. I love it when my work is critiqued!

Where to post, where to post...

I've been thinking about where on the forums I should post the webcomic when I have some to show. Should I post them here, on a separate thread, or just on Flickr?

I can give advice - post them in the first post of this thread and new message on the thread.
For example, I do this in Russian-language forum - add a new image of the new post forum threads, and at the same time change the first message - that would have been set.
