caustic crystal farming

o7 CMDR's,

I am out trying to farm caustic crystals. I just found one at (dead) Titan Taranis. It seems very hard to find even one.

What is the best location to farm this material?

Thanks! 🫡

It has been a while, but I used the Titan Taranis site for most of my Thargoid related material farming, including caustic crystals. This is also where I started to learn how to kill interceptors (i.e. hunters and Cyclops interceptor). Caustic crystals do occasionally drop when those guys are killed (again, it has been a while) and slowly I maxed out my materials while hanging out at Taranis, including caustic crystals. The advantage of this site is that you only deal with the one interceptor at a time, and often there's an NPC "Rescue Ship" to throw you a repair limpet or two. As well, the proximity to Fleet Carriers for repairs and re-arming is very helpful. On the downside, it is slow. Collecting materials at Conflict Zones (for example) is faster, but there's more than one interceptor and one tends to be quite at risk when focused on collecting.

The other area is Titan Maelstroms. Again, the issue (in my opinion) is that there's a lot going on and I personally find it hard to focus on collecting caustic crystals.

Hopefully others will chime in. Just a note, I do need a few mats so I am going to head to Titan Taranis and leisurely pick up mats and maybe kill a few hunters for 4.5M credits each. Bottom line, Titan Taranis remains my favorite easy-to-pick-up-mat site.

I don't know if the availability of materials dissipate over time. Taranis is the oldest titan ruin. There are 5 others. Indra is the newest ruin (or am I remembering wrong?).

That is exactly what I'm doing right now. Hopefully I catch a few more crystals.

I have stationed my carrier at Titan Taranis and went out there to grind. I did find some caustic crystals over time and am slowly building up my stock.
While doing that I also fight some thargoids. I even saw a basilisk and a few medusa's that I tried (didn't go to well and had to bug out). They are good for weapon parts and bio-mechanical conduit. Other materials are to be found as well, like propulsion elements. It would help to have a thargoid material trader.
Like most game play in Elite it is a grind. The
caustic crystal drops are rare and it takes a few days to fill this material to 150.
One thing to keep in mind is to get a faster ship. It is fun to fight some thargoids, but you don't have to.
I use a Python2

got to go to a fresh titan corpse, the one still in a caustic cloud. I filled up on caustic crystals in a couple of trips to one, granted, I spent a lot of time cruising in there, went there in a conda, with a huge amount of limpets and caustic sinks, so I could last there pretty much for hours to no end. I didn't stay that long, but I still got a ton of mats, including caustic crystal.

can get those from scouts. It was a shooting gallery at the dead thor, in the day between it dying and then exploding there was a cloud of scouts getting stuck on an asteroid, so I went there to farm the scouts and filled up on all those mats, they didn't shoot back! 🤣

Hmmmm ... guess i will give Thor another try. Last time I was not that successful.

At Thor now. Seems like the caustic clout is dissolved. Caustic Crystals is still a pain to find. I have not seen scouts. Some hunters and an interceptor so far.
I did find some crystals, but the pay grade is very low.

I have been going to Thor with a 'Conda with 5 Caustic Sinks and can last hours collecting, until I have had enough.

At all other ex-Titans, you get no caustic cloud but you do also get NPC pirates aggro (even in Solo) as soon as you pick up any Cargo (not Mats).
I suppose I could go in and fully pew pew at these, but would be a waste of my time when all I need is the Thargoid stuff.

Yeah ... it is part of the gameplay. The thargoids can be avoided, but the pirates come looking for you. I haven't had much problem though. And Thor is not caustic anymore. i went back to Taranis and have had more luck there. I fight some thargoids (with help of NPC) as well and get some credits for that ..

Now get no Caustic at Thor and as soon as I had 1T of something cargo NPC pirates started on me.
My EAXMC's were absolutely useless against this and I soon had rebuy.
I'll have to look into normal guns on pew pew K2 or P2 - - - or maybe do nothing - was a bit boring.

Yeah ... it is either thargoids or NPC you will have to fight off. One thing you can do is put all cargo items on the ignore list, or abandon the cargo as soon as you encounter a pirate. That way only materials show on the radar. I did that with the cargo items and the materials that are full. The materials are of course good for engineering and synthesis.

I don't see much use in those cargo items anyway. You can sell them, but you won't make much. The one thing that comes to mind is the thargoid heart and meta-allos to get a thargoid bobble head at a tech-broker. Other than that they are mostly useless . I filled up my carrier cargo with some of it, but stopped collecting them.

Other than that use a fast ship. I use a python mk2, which I linked in an earlier reply. It has a 1A collector limpet, but picking up materials is mostly one-by-one anyway. I like the firepower, because I encounter hunters, cyclops, basilisk and at time a medusa. A clipper would also suffice, but best stay away from the stronger thargoids.
You don't have to fight the thargoids and concentrate on collecting material, but it is a bit excitement in between the boring flying left to right for materials.
There are always rescue ships that will give repair limpets for the hull. The modules do take damage, but it is a short hop to my (any) carrier.

If I need some of those cargo items, I will go in with pew-power and avoid the thargoids.

It is a grind, like much of the gameplay in ED. It is up to you to shake it up. You can always visit a system close by for missions or a RES.

Well I just went in and got aggro from Thargoids AND NPC pirates, so as I have most CS synth mats, I will just wait 2-3 (EDIT or 4 or 5 or 6 (at the current boring, boring rate)) weeks for next Titan hearts and then 2 weeks after that KABOOM to get more mats from the next recently deceased Titan.

Hope we have a decent CG between these 6 weeks - e.g 40th celebrations etc........ 🍺 🍺 🍺 🍺 🍔🍔🍔🍔🍔🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿
Also hoping next FU due 25/09/24 is including more info other than PP2
