Celcius please

As a dedicated explorer I always read the detailed scans in the system map.
Today I was the first one to tag a Terrestrial water world.
Surface temp : 319k .... But do I really need an external calculator to bring it to Celcius?
Why not make this selectable in the options menu? (Like mph/km in race games)

Thnx ;)

Is subtracting 273 so hard?

Apparently it is...

Jeez, I hate to break the news to the OP (and some of those wanting to talk about other units of measurements); Astronomy works on kelvin as a standard. It's easy enough to convert to/from. It means they need to work the maths in their head. Or a calculator. Heaven forbid they had to do what I had to when I was in school... Use one of these:

Celsius / Fahrenheit is not used in astrological measurements - it is used in materials. That said:

1) Kelvin is for in space
2) C / F is for on the surface in your SRV (because that would then be sensible)
3) C / F could also be used to measure the heat levels of your SRV / Ship as they relate to YOUR temperature (as opposed to existing % scale)

For #1, already in game...no changes.
For #2, It would be in the function tab as a toggled ui function for K / C / F with K being the default to prevent another tea party massacre
For #3, Also a toggled function - though you wouldn't use K given the low levels of heat. Instead it's the % scale, C or F

None of this is necessary - but it would be a nice simulator gimmick.
I use my external lights and adjust my ui lighting when in the black...all I'm really doing is fidgeting half the time, but it does add a level of realism and enjoyment to the game for me. So I won't ever decry adding these sorts of features because I do enjoy them.

Because, as a "dedicated explorer" you should know that Kelvin is the correct unit to use.

Yeah I know but when you use celsius your whole life its difficult to adapt :) And if I play a race game I get the option to chose
Mph or kmh , I ask nothing fancy ;)

I do. It's called Google! :p

In all seriousness all I know that around 300K is about nice and Caribbean warm.

290 - 310 is livable range! Anything under that is hell frozen over and anything above is a bonus.

good idea. except 2).

Temperature scale with Kelvins has no negative numbers. This is space (this is the world in all it's variability) so there will be much more situations where the temperatures will be below zero if we go Celsius/Fahrenheit and that will not be having a sense especially when it is very much below zero.
Also it is a future and the unification is always good for measurements and there's no better scale for it as Kelvins.

Fair enough point.

Honestly, until external temperatures actually matter (beyond fuel scooping that is)...it's a moot request. Now, if planetary surfaces were made to be more exotic in their temperatures and the SRV made such that it had an acceptable operating range (a la No Man's Sky), then temperature readouts become not only nice but crucial.

Until such gameplay exists (and all the necessary supporting structure, like loadouts for SRVs to combat such extremes)...yeah.

For practical use Celsius is optimal as the numbers are small. Kelvin has far greater scientific use as its start is absolute zero, as already written. As for Elite, the values vary so wildly that (imo) Kelvin is the only real option. Just remember that 300ish is cozy.

I support the idea. Right now we have a different way to do measurements, different Currencies, and there not one main Language. If it has not change in a few Thousands years ago why do you think it will change in a few thousand years from now?
