Greetings Commanders!

This week the Elite franchise celebrates an amazing 40 years of bringing you the freedom to explore the Milky Way in your own unique way!

Elite (1984)

1984_product-image-1920x1080.jpg

"Elite" was written by David Braben and Ian Bell starting in 1982 while the authors were still at Cambridge University. It was first published by Acornsoft on the BBC Micro in September 1984 to huge critical acclaim. The rights to other computer platforms were then auctioned by Jacqui Lyons of Marjacq, and British Telecom then went on to publish on many other platforms under the name of Firebird.

"Elite" set many firsts, and was the first genuine 3D game on home computers. Even many years after its release it is fondly remembered. For example "Probably the best computer game ever" (The Times, December 1988). It went on to sell around 1,000,000 units, and is popular still, having appeared on most popular formats.

Indulge your nostalgia and experience the first incarnation with the original Elite, available FREE in the Frontier Store!

Frontier Elite II (1993)

Written in five and a half years by David Braben, with Konami Inc of Japan as publisher, the game was released in October 1993 and was in the top few slots in the UK Gallup chart for the best part of the following year. It was the best selling game in Europe 1993 according to Gallup.

"Frontier" also set a number of firsts. It was the first game to have real-sized planets, where cities could be viewed from orbit, it was the first to use curved surfaces (Bezier), the only game to do a palette-fit every frame to get best use of colours!

Frontier First Encounters (1995)

Released in Easter 1995, "First Encounters" also had a number of firsts to its name. The game was renowned for its detailed modelling of the geography of planets, despite the relative lack of power of the target PCs at the time. It was the first game to use procedural texturing to generate the vegetation, snow and more on the planet surfaces. Mountain ranges, cliffs and wonderful alien landscapes and atmospheric effects all contributed to the atmosphere of the game, and the coloured lighting from the redder stars gave some planets an eerie look.

Elite Dangerous (2014)

Elite_Key_Art_Refresh24_1920x1080.jpg

Released in December 2014, the BAFTA-nominated Elite Dangerous is the definitive, massively multiplayer space epic. 10 years later and Elite Dangerous has seen two expansions, an ongoing narrative filled with political intrigue, corporate espionage, a galaxy wide war against the extraterrestrial threat of the Thargoids and astounding community led initiatives and activities!

I'm not much of a paint guy, or red for that matter, but that flat color on the Python Mk II looks fantastic. Got me one :)

Many congratulations to the FDev team. There aren't many games with this kind of longevity, but I sure am glad to be part of it. Here's to many more!

While I appreciate the free decal...
The ruby paintjobs are WAAAAY too steep. Not everyone in the world have a purchasing power of brexit Britain, US or Western Europe, just to remind.

Also, I think that it would be a good time to consider putting E:D to the rest, and think about a brand new story. Not in the 1:1 galaxy, where we would need at least a 2-3 generations focused on discovery like the workers in Zaonce. I think that the current Bubble would be enough.

Anyway - Happy 40th birthday for 1337/ELITE! o7

Congratulations to all involved in reaching this milestone for the franchise, and a massive kudos to all the fans that have supported the games, both as latecomers like myself, and particularly those who have been here since the beginning.

The free decal is nice and I've claimed that, but red isn't my colour, so I'll not be buying any of the paintjobs (I'll also agree with others that they're a little pricey). Here's to many more years of Elite!

Agree with this. The new prices are too steep, and the community in general agrees. (Listen to the recent Lave Radio episode 502, for a wider view on this.)

Completely understand that a price hike was going to happen eventually, but what we got was too extreme. Hopefully at some point the community team will take the feedback on board and revisit their decisions on pricing.

I was 15 years old when Elite came out in 1984.
Played the socks off Frontier: Elite II on my Amiga 1200.

I love everything about Elite: Dangerous - visuals, sound, etc. But I still to this day wish for something like Frontier: Elite II, but with Elite: Dangerous's graphics and sound assets, and single player offline - like the original Elites! It still saddens me somewhat that you made primarily an MMO, but with an Elite desktop theme.

Congrats on the Ruby anniversary nonetheless.

10k ARX for each paintjob is insane, even the SRV and fighters.

There also should be a bundle to get ALL the ruby paintjobs (including those for which you don't currently own the ships), in a similar way to the Azure paintjob that was applied to players when the Horizons DLC was rolled into the main game.

Happy 40th birthday to Elite! 🥳

This is where it started all those years ago when my Dad got a copy for the BBC (it still works).

I cannot even fathom how many years I have sunk into playing Frontier: Elite II. It was such a game changer, and had such a profound impact on my gaming future. I love it, and still occasionally play it on DosBOX. It was in fact the reason I first started posting here long, long ago :)

And here we are today brought together by yet another Elite game pushing and changing the boundaries of gaming. Thanks to all the team for the continued hard work and thanks for the decal. I like the station bobblehead, I'll see if I have enough ARX to buy it.

My dad & I played the original Acornsoft Elite on the family BBC Model B (with disk drive!) when I was in my early teens. Playing ED gives me a link to fond memories from my childhood & good times spent with someone long since passed.

I learned not to trust the docking computer, we made the ships from card & balsa wood, he wrote short sci-fi stories based in the Elite 'universe', my avatar on this forum is the Acornsoft badge I 'won' by reaching Elite, filling in the card supplied in the original box with a code the game supplied.

We both dreamed of flying around the galaxy & meeting other player pilots doing their own thing, maybe teaming up for a while or going up against each other if they were hostile for years & hoped that one day we'd be able to.

Sadly he died before ED launched but I think it'd have been right up his street. My mum passed away recently but she enjoyed watching me play ED & hearing about my various exploits whether it be defending my territory or exploring the far reaches of the Milky Way.

This game based about the far future is a link to the past. I still play regularly in both Legacy and Live, looking forward to seeing what will happen next. I'm hoping for a way to help the Thargoids (not to kill humans but to make peace & work together), for more planets to land on, and more ships to fly & vehicles to drive is always a win ;)

o7 David Braben, Ian Bell & Frontier, may you live in interesting times.

Congratulations and Happy 40th Birthday to Elite! Although I didn't play myself back then, I often watched my husband playing and in the early days was more concerned about the phone bills! :D I enjoyed watching him play the various versions over the years and when news came about a Kickstarter for Elite: Dangerous I was excited as he was! By then I had been flying in Combat Flight Sims (Air Warrior and Aces High) for about 15 years, so loved the idea of flying space-ships. We both backed it to Alpha access level and never regretted one penny of it. I hope Elite will be around for many more years and will continue to play as long as I am able.

Happy Birthday!
Been playing since it went on Speccy using cassette loader and the 'lenslock'(?) device to prevent piracy even then and spent far too much time on it then!

Thank you also for allowing me to be a Spaceman on my very own Fireball XL5 even though I'm still waiting for my crew in the seats

I still have my original boxed copy of the 48K Spectrum Gold Edition 👍
