Celebrating 35 years of Elite!

Actually, there were two. In 1985, playing Elite on the C64 and bought an unknown package from a guy at a space station and soon after watching the 'Trumbles' slowly envelope the entire viewscreen, until I crashed my ship. One of the first times I literally laughed out loud at a computer game. The second was when I was flying to a station and was able to look out of my left & right views and found I was flying in perfect synchronization with two other ships. At night with the monitor as the only light source in the entire room, it was a very serene experience!
I've been in love with this game ever since. And nothing has captured my space flying love since!
Elite has always been the best game that no one has ever heard of!!!

First off congrats on 35 years! I’m nearly 40 myself and didn’t play the original but my older brother did. I remember telling him about a FL mod that paid homage to elite that I was into back in the early 2000’s. Fast forward to late last year when I first played Elite: dangerous on xb1 and I think my best memory so far was my first Thargoid encounter it was an excellent experience- the soundscape was out of this world and I felt lucky when the thing disappeared off radar! One of the most fun memory is fighting in conflictzone with capital ships coming in all of a sudden. Made it so epic! Also saving a friend bringing him fuel because he didnt bring a fuel scoop. It was fun seeing how all that worked in the game.

My favorite memory was trying to match the rotation speed of the mail slot of the stations on a ZX Spectrun keyboard with rubber keys... I was used to spend several hours trying to doc....

Damn you, 35yrs, now i feel well old. Anyway....

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, to be fair it was my lifelong friends house, half a mile from mine and in Nottm UK, it was just after 7:00pm, his wife was going to bingo so me and Pad would have the ZX Speccy to ourselves all night, interacting with a few cans of beer and some nuts to keep us going. Angie bid us a fun night as we didi her.
On went the ZX, and after a couple of the dreaded R tape loading error messages we got to the lenslok, you know what i mean, that little red plastic thing that frustrated the hell of of many a player.
We tried and tried, reloaded the game, few more R messages, more beer and nuts, more R messages, more failed lenslok attempts, you get the drift of this i'm sure.
A couple of hours passed unnoticed and Angie came home with a pleasant surprise, £100 win, which got us more beer and nuts.
She saw us loading the game and casually asked did the speccy crash, so we told her our events of the night which got us sniggered at, anyway the game had now loaded and was ready for the lenslok, without skipping a beat Angie looked at the tv and said BQ, Pad laughed as did myself, Angie was insistent so we keyed in BQ, that woman laughed at us for ages as it was correct.
So we switched the ZX off and listened to floyd and drank more beer, bloody lenslok eyes

Great game though and still have the same ZX and game in the loft, memories are made of that game and that night, 10/10

My Favourite memory... a difficult choice. Killing time with other commanders whilst waiting, at a barnacle site, for Thargoids to appear. I was sat on the top of my SRV looking at the scenery (in VR). Suddenly above us a group of ships, including the "big 3", appeared. The massacre began; it was glorious! the scale of the ships, the weapons fire, the desperation, and futility, of those fleeing. This was a spectacle that far exceeded anything I had seen in films. I was like a rabbit in the headlights, so much in awe that I made no attempt to survive. I was, I think, the last, when my time eventually came........

It was the end of term at Sixth Form back in 1990. There was a group of us who had managed to convince the computer studies lecturer to let us stay late and borrow the BBC Micros for the evening to see who could a mass the most money in an Elite competition. I think I remember one of us getting a mission to take down an experimental ship and we all said "wouldn't it me amazing if we could some how link all the computers so we could all meet up in game". That same group of people all signed up for the kickstarter and I would like to thank you for bringing our dream true.

CMDR Delta Spectre here, the best moment was in Elite: Dangerous when I finally reached the center of the galaxy after around a hundred jumps just to take a pcture of the Sagittarius A black hole. I didin’t want to return after seeing its spectacular sight.

I played the original Elite on the Commodore 64 back in the 80’s. My favorite memory was finally tracking down the stealth ship and getting it into my sights. I let loose on it for the final time and it blew up. I was so intent on killing it, my guns also blew up everything that was released when it exploded. I realized that I also blew up the stealth cargo container that was released when he was destroyed. I was devastated, it was the beginning of the end for Commander Jameson’s career. He finished with the rank of Deadly. I still have the disk somewhere. Maybe, there might be a time when he finally ranks up to Elite and I can send in that code and get that sweet prize.

My favorite memory is when I bought an imperial courier and was testing out the engineering in the Pleiades nebula. Two thargoids pulled me from my jump to Maia. They did the normal disable and scan action, but as they left, I only noticed one of them leaving. The other had stayed and was just staring at me. (Maybe he was a rookie?). So, I figured I'd just slowly back off and leave. But the thargoid followed me. It didn't matter my maneuvers or speed, he was right on my wing. I ended up putting on Danger Zone, snapping a few shots and buzzing around in a little formation for a bit before leaving. As my FSD was charging, I felt bad for leaving it. Like it was some kind of puppy or something.

First memory was sitting at the keyboard of my BBC B Computer, watching the block counter increase wondering just when something else would happen...

First scary moment was the launch - burst of sound + web across screen.

Then the frustration of trying to dock the Cobra - remember that we had to correct the rotation manually (and it would automatically return to zero) - and juggling the up/down/left/right keys and throttle using the keyboard. I quickly built myself an analogue joystick with fire button.

The frustration of having to swap tapes to save the commander … and the disappointment that I couldn't carry the Elite status itno Elite Dangerous...

CHeers,
Colin

My favorite memory was on my return trip from exploring toward the galactic core, I teamed up with Iridium Wing to escort me back to my destination, along with another explorer. I had been out for approximately 4 or 5 months and had a ton of scan data. I typically played in Open so those guys helped defend against potential Pirate attacks. We live streamed the whole thing, those guys are amazing. All praise to Iridium Wing!!

My favourite memory from Elite occurred in late 1985, in the Maises system. Having had Elite since Christmas Day 1984, I had been immersed in the whole Elite Galaxy. I had explored the game, fully knitted out my Cobra MkIII, made several Galactic Hyperdrive jumps, and progressed through the combat ranks to Deadly. Since that point I had worked towards gaining Elite status, but who knew how many ships had to be destroyed to get there?

I had settled in one of the later Galactic charts, shuttling between two of the riskier systems. Maises was an Anarchy system and usually entailed some intense battles to get through to the Coriolis station.
I'd had a feeling I must be closing in on the final combat rank and had been jumped by 4 pirates. Having engaged them quickly I had got through the first three enemies very fast. The final ship had made a second run at me only to go the same way of the others, turned into scoopable alloys.

Then the message flashed up - "Right On Commander".

It had been an age since the last of these messages had appeared and I knew this meant that this could be the moment, but I'd hoped for that the last time.
Bringing up the status screen I saw :

Green
Clean
and finally
---Elite---

In 1986 I had an Amstrad 6128 and with it was Elite on a 3 inch disc. Oh the joy of elite loading in under a minute and being able to play it on a 19 inch telly.

Cmdr Arkwright.

My best memory was being released from the landing pad for the first time and going in a straight line into darkness after that, without cargo or mission.
Traveling into the infinite vastness of space, with Trevithick Dock getting further away from me,
The sense of freedom.

Cmdr Romanenko, PC.

Well, it was very long ago back in 1992, when I first run Elite on my Speccy 48K. I guess it was so called Novosibirka or Elite-II, modified by Vladimir Kladov. And the first thing I saw after leaving the station was a convoy of pythons going somewhere on their own buisiness, and then there was a couple of police vipers shooting some smuggler. After a bunch of arcades I was used to, to see a whole giant universe living it's own life and doing it's own buisness -- it was a real shock, that, I guess, made me a fan of elite for all the times :)

Well, that sucks. In my primary account, I'm too far away in deep space to get to a station to earn arx and I have zero right now, also, buying arx didn't work. Internal server error 500, and money gone, but still no arx... :(

Submitted a ticket.
