Challenging (skill based) things to do in Elite

I don't understand why you put in buggyball, but omitted buckyball races. Try to make it from Sol to Sgr A* in less than 8 hours ;-) (no, not me - have yet to go to Sgr A* even once). Or retrace any other of the past races.

For the more contemplative players: to the far rim in a sidey.

Landing in a station FA off. Bonus points for coming in sideways/backwards. Fun to do with a conda and take up the whole entrance :T

Canyon Racing
Requires: Horizons, small fast ships
Location: Planetoids smaller than 500km. INOVIK A 2 A is a good example.
Activity: Find a network of canyons, then fly down them at lowest possible elevation at maximum possible speed.
Goal: Don't destroy your ship by slamming into walls/floors/other racers
Difficult because: Blasting down canyons is a tense thrill ride, and its completely up to your piloting skills to do it. Ideally, either race down the same canyon with friends, or do time-trials to see who can clear the canyon the fastest.

This is something I have to do! Loved running down canyons with my Anaconda during my last exploration trip. Do you, or anyone, have more suggestions for nice small planets with deep canyons?

for horizons only:

canyon racing: get in a courier/dbs/eagle/vulture, find a nice planet with a lot of canyons. proceed to fly through said canyons as low as possible.

minimum ship needed: eagle, but dbs/courier is ideal
minimum assets needed: enough for rebuy in case you die by hitting the canyon walls
where to do: anywhere you find a cool looking moon

As well as the Buggy Ball SRV race the Buckyball Racing Club do lots of other time trial type events. There is something on most weeks. There is a lot of skill involved in ploting routes between systems and minimising your time in SC and docking. Most events can normally be run in any mode. There is normally a class for people with limited resources e.g. stock sidey/eagle. While you can run the events with others, since they are time trials, they are normally run on you own. Times are proven using screen shots of IGT.

Landing on Archenar 3
Requires:any ship, Horizons
Location: Archenar 3

Planet has a gravity of 6.7, the goal is simply to land your ship safely, the bigger the ship, the more difficult it is.

Once you done Achenar 3 try HD 148937, 3rd planet is landable and has 9.77G ;) It is around 1kly out of the bubble though IIRC.

I was considering this, but given the current state of the hyperjump mechanic it isn't really all that skill based. Jump, turn, jump, turn, jump, turn, scoop, turn, jump. I'm sure it is fun in its own way but not really in the spirit of the OP.

Here's a challenge for players with ships like the FAS and FDL who find PvE combat in RES too easy. Tackle the three "gold trap" Anacondas in a Strong Signal Source by yourself, without using any of the Big Three ships.

This has been a long-term goal of mine, and lately I've been attempting it without success in a Python. Still experimenting with different outfitting and weapons just for this purpose. So far the best I could manage was, in a less common spawn of just two Anacondas, to kill both.

The annoying thing about this challenge is that it takes time to find a SSS with the right spawn. Two basic tips: (1) travel at the minimun SC speed to allow you to quickly drop in a SSS; (2) do this close to a station in case your canopy breaks!

Don't take this seriously, I just want to make a point and I won't discuss anymore here. Nothing against the OP!

Chair Spining
Requires: Elite
Location: Anywhere
Activity: Play Elite while spining your chair
Goal: Spin as fast as you can while playing the game
Diffcult because: You become dizzy and may fall to the floor

Imaginary Sandbox
Requires: Nothing
Location: Your mind
Activity: Close your eyes and imagine you're in a space ship, you can explore, trade, fight and mine!
Goal: Be the best in every single activity
Diffcult because: You may keep throwing money to FD but you wont get gameplay, activities and interactions which require player skill and challenges.

I find it a little concerning that there have been so few things to add to this list. And especially concerning that all but one of them are completely without in-game reward - Shadow Deliveries in big slow ships being the notable exception.

Really hope the 2.1 update adds some much needed variety and challenge to the things we can do in this game!

Basejumping in an SRV.

Basically find a really tall mountain with nice steep sides, drive off the top and try to survive the fall to the bottom.

Edit: oops, already mentioned by Agony Aunt.

Edit #2: nice thread by the way ... repped.

Thanks :) Not 100% sure about adding the SRV base jumping to the list. I don't doubt that it takes skill (and a bit of luck), but it seems a bit.... suicidal? Not really all that in-keeping with lore and trying to survive in a cut-throat galaxy and all that ;)

Montain climbing on hi g worlds. 3 g+. You need to be good on driving to do this.

Also canyon climbing. Take a deep canyon and try to drive up from it. A challange even in low g worlds. It took me 3 hours + and I couldnt leave to take a cup of coffee. That would have sent me tumbeling down.

Enjoy. Cmdr Dave Adams

A mining bad. Take a asteriobelt in unocupied space. Take a miningship that is good armed. Go mining in the asteroidbelt. Kill everyone you find there. Go to all belts and kill all thats there. Repeat at least 3 times. And you will find that thats a challange.

Sounds like something that could make for an interesting Buggyball race - if one could find a decently static starting and finishing point :) Still I think it goes in the same category as SRV base jumping, somewhat death-wish like and not really defendable from an in game lore / role playing perspective. Then again people base-jump in real life so who am I to judge ;)

Not sure I understand this one - don't NPC's just re-spawn at random in asteroid belts and similar places?

They turn the heat up. They started to hunt me down in that system. Bigger ships. Shooting without warning. Better pilots. And everywere I go they hunt you in that system. I got really hunted. Just fleeing whit a lot if damage a cupple of times. And destroyed a couple of times. I did have to abandon that system, that I tried to take for myself. Very interesting and a bit scary. I did it in solo, if it matter I dont know. And I thought that they will forget in a day or so, but no. Mad as bulls.
