Change View?

yes. Go to the outfitter and hover over different hardpoints and/or utilty points. Other than that,.....no. there is no 3rd person view

Exterior cams would be very nice, but as it is no - they do not exist. You can still use your compass to see if you're above the marker to dock. The more you do it, the easier it becomes to gauge where you are. The system could use some tweaking but it is very doable with practice - like when you learn to drive a car, you get a feel for it.

Basically - no!

Devs feel this would break immersion, and unless you are some sort of psychic, and have the ability to do an 'out of body experience' at will, they are probably right! :)

Is there a way to change my view so I can see my ship from another angle?

Good question ,but like other here say, there's no such thing yet, (even if it's on every -sane- player's list).
Only place you can really see Your ship is at the outfitter screen (or on another monitor, if you have another account / computer running the game).

Hoping the devs see reason and add it at some point

There has been discussion about providing some means of seeing your ship from a third person view. However, it was stressed that this would only be to facilitate cosmetic needs and would in no way be able to provide an advantage in combat.

The devs are willing to ignore Newtons 1st law of motion but having external view is immersion breaking....riiiight

I can't imagine how they dared take that decision (considering who's the deadliest SOB in Space)

Mythbusters from the Twilight Zone, S9:E26 had this piece of info:

Hello Folk!

To add a little developer clarification:

We are looking at external camera views, with the following caveats:

* They are contextualised as camera/drone systems
* They are not designed to be used as alternate flight views
* Their primary function is to allow "beauty shots"
* They may have occasional tertiary game play functions (such as seeing how close you are to something)

No ETA at the moment though.

Hope this helps.

its not ignorance of the 1st law... to think about it immersively, its a restriction, by the craft, to keep you from turning yourself and any passengers you may have into red puddles with your 4000km/s, 60G turns in "conventional" flight. The TCS (thruster control) keeping the craft operating within your physical tolerances.

not sure if theres any lore to back this up, but it's how I think of it.

I'd rather not kill myself maneuvering whilst trying to line up on the guy trying to kill me... not to mention, if I HAPPEN to survive the maneuvers, the delta, in-combat will make attaining a firing solution on target for more than a few milliseconds nigh-impossible.

No they are absolutley wrong it wont break immersion and its a waste of a fine graphics engine even the space shuttle in it latter years had cameras so they could see the outside of the ship im sure it didnt break the immersion for them!. All the have to do is make sure no tactical advantage can be gained for external view and thats easy to programe u cant fire in external view simples

I'd add to that that your hardpoints can't be deployed while using it to add a 1-2 second "timer" before being able to shoot - it would completely eliminate the advantage while not utterly nerfing you if someone ambushes you while in external camera mode.

I took the OP to be talking about views of his ship from a distance, hence the 'OOBE' comment, but if you're talking external mounted cameras, I don't see that they would offer much over what you have now, but should be entirely possible.

However, I've found myself developing a 'spacial awareness' for my ship, and find the view from the cockpit to be fine when docking/manoeuvring.

If you're talking camera drones, that seems a bit of a stretch to me, just to explain away an external view ability.

I think we'd all like the ability to take shots with our craft in it, but I agree that needs to be thought about carefully, so as to negate any flight/combat advantage it may give you.

Hmmm Personally I would say adding a 3d view to outfitter would be a nice and simple, non immersion breaking addition.

And kinda makes sense I mean you are at an outfitter, why wouldn't they have a camera/drone you can control around to check your ship?
