A lot of times, I have thoughts about problems certain animals have with their habitat requirements in the game, so I decided to put some efforts on a few specific species that have it as the most extreme. I may continue it that way, may switch to a more inclusive form that compresses multiple species, may do both and may not continue anything at all.
First in the alphabet, it’s not due to the alphabetical order: the aardvark
In real life, the aardvark is a habitat generalist, living almost everywhere in Sub Saharan Africa. In the game, it isn’t bad in requirements, but it doesn’t fit a lot of the environments it lives in in real life.
Biomes:
It has the grassland and tropical biomes. These fit the animals, as they are found in grasslands and rainforests, but they also exist in more places.
Aardvarks can live in deserts, such as the Kalahari and the Namib.
Foliage density:
For an animal found in rainforests, aardvarks sure lack tolerance for dense foliage, up to 25%. In fact, the meerkats, that I’m fairly certain always live in open environments (correct me if I’m wrong), can handle more plants than they do.
I am uncertain what the density tolerance should be, but it should probably be higher. I will assume something above 50%.
Because they’re still found in barren environments, the minimum should stay at 0%.
Terrain:
The terrain requirements of the aardvark fit those of a classic grassland animal, if not a bit more forgiving to sand.
But it doesn’t really fit them specifically.
Grass- they shouldn’t require to have grass (neither long nor short), to better fit forests, deserts and, very importantly, their enclosures in many zoos.
Sand: to better suit deserts, they should tolerate more sand. Maybe not up to 100%, but probably up to at least 40%.
Soil: their current soil requirements are 10-50%.
This time, I’ll argue the minimum is too low, as they are animals extremely adapted for digging. A better minimum will be 20% or 25%, judging by other diggers in the game such as the meerkat.
The maximum is also too low, as many times, they are found in enclosures in certain zoos where the ground is solely dirt for digging. The maximum should be a full 100%
Rock and snow: nothing bad there. They avoid rocky areas and don’t live in snowy places.
Sorry for the long ramble.
If I made some mistakes, please correct me.
